DURANGO, Colo. – Samantha Martirez ended California Baptist University's first tournament of the season with an exclamation point Tuesday at the Skyhawk West Regional Preview at the Hillcrest Golf Club.
Martirez, the reigning PacWest Freshman of the Year and conference champion, climbed 39 spots up the 100-player leaderboard to tie for ninth place overall after shooting even-par 71 in the second and final round to complete a 149 (78-71).
CBU carded a 307 on Tuesday to finish seventh out of 20 teams with a 612 (305-307), with all four of the Lancers' scorers breaking 80 in the second round.
"It was a great opportunity to see the regional golf course and get familiar with it," Coach Marc Machado said. "There were some hard pin locations and the greens are fast, which is a difficult combination. The knowledge we gained from this tournament is very valuable and will definitely help us at regionals in May."
Martirez birdied three times on the days and played her final six holes one-under to record the Lancers' first par or better round of the year.
"I am very proud of Sam, she was so clutch down the stretch," Machado said. "She played her last four holes on round two at one-under and cumulative for both rounds at one-over. Her ninth-place finish was impressive in this large 100-play field, with most of the best West Regional teams."
Erica Wang finished 30th in the tournament with a 153 (73-79), but it was Jocelyn Chee Yi Min who turned in the second-best round of the day at 78. Her 155 total (77-78) put her in 40th.
"I am excited after watching Jocelyn, a true freshman," Machado said. "She didn't seem nervous for her very first even and was very steady all tournament. She has a lot of potential."
Jordan Martin took 52nd with a 157 (76-81), while Yu Ling Lee served as the fourth scorer for CBU on Tuesday with a 79. Lee, a true freshman, shot 164 (85-79) overall. The Lancers hit another preview next week when they attend Dallas Baptist's NCAA Division II Championship Preview at Houston's Bay Oaks Country Club.
"I saw some glimpses of solid play, and we are excited to carry on to our next event in Houston for the NCAA national preview," Machado said. "We are a very young team and will continue to grow and become more and more mentally tough. I'm excited for what this season holds."
