HOUSTON – A seven-stroke improvement secured California Baptist University's 12th-place finish at the NCAA Division II National Preview hosted by Dallas Baptist at Bay Oaks Country Club on Tuesday.
All four of the Lancers' scorers broke 80, with three coming in at 75 or better. CBU's trio of Samantha Martirez, Erica Wang and Kristyna Abrahamova all tied for 33rd place in the 78-player field with 152 totals over two rounds.
"The four counting scores played their last four holes at one-over, which was solid and a very good change from round one," Coach Marc Machado said. "This field is the strongest field we will face all year. I believe this field will be very close to the same or even stronger than the actual national championship field in May."
CBU has now previewed both the regional and national championship courses for Division II this season. Although it has been two challenging tournaments to start, Machado scheduled them purposefully with an eye on what is to come.
"The whole point of these first two tournaments was to play against the best and to get a chance to see the regional and national courses," Machado said. "It will be a great advantage going down the stretch for us."
Wang carded the best round of the day for the Lancers with a two-over-par 74 on Tuesday. The junior birdied twice on the day and played her final six holes one-under par.
Abrahamova and Jocelyn Chee Yi Min both shot 75 over their final 18 holes. Abrahamova birdied once in the second round and avoided any big numbers throughout the day.
"Kristyna was a nice addition for us, and definitely showed that she belongs in the tournament lineup," Machado said. "She has a lot of tournament experience and was very steady for us."
Chee Yi Min birdied twice and also eagled on the par-five fifth hole to finish three over, and wind up with a 157 overall.
Martirez completed her 152 with a 79 on Tuesday after she opened with a 73 on Monday. Jordan Martin was the fourth Lancer to save her best round for Tuesday, with an 84 giving her a 169 (85-84).
With two tournaments left in the fall season, CBU takes a week off before partaking in the Western Washington Invite at Bellingham, Washington's Bellingham Golf and Country Club.
"We now have a measuring stick of where we are and what we need to work on after playing in these two very stacked tournaments," Machado said.
