PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Despite getting off to its best start in six years, California Baptist University was far from content and pulled out its first win over a top-20 ranked team this weekend.
A quick start and late push put the 16th-ranked Lancers over the top in a one-goal victory over No. 14 Bucknell at the Bruno Fall Classic at Brown University. CBU improves to 3-1 this year to build on its best start during the NCAA era, which began in 2013.
This most recent victory was a good response from the Lancers, Coach Kevin Rosa said. After CBU led by as many as four goals, it managed to break a tie late in the third quarter to rebound and pull away for good.
"We played so well at times this week, so we knew we could do that again," Rosa said. "There was never any panic or anything like that. We had to get back to doing what got us up. We had to be offensive minded and active, when we do that good things happen."
Dominick Nevarez continued to lead the Lancers in goal scoring, with a team-high four against the Bison. Jonny Lotero and Tanner Shore both netted hat tricks, and Caleb Rogers scored twice in the win.
Through four games, Nevarez is leading CBU in goals with 12 overall and it's well deserved.
"He's been working on his game and his shot has improved a lot," Rosa said of Nevarez. "He's putting himself in better positions and getting the ball out of his hand quickly. When he catches and shoots like he has been, defenders can't even get to him."
Water polo is not usually known as a game of runs, but CBU put a number of impressive runs together already this year and it was no different against Bucknell.
"We played some of the best water polo I've seen out of us at times," Rosa said. "It was a really big roller coaster, but we played some great water polo."
Nevarez connected on two shots a minute and three seconds into the game to give CBU a 2-0 lead right away. Shore and Lotero both put one away within a minute of each other to up the advantage to 4-0 with 5:33 remaining in the first quarter.
The Bison showed their ranking is well deserved and fought back and scored the next five goals to take their first lead, 5-4, less than two minutes into the second quarter.
Goals from Shore, Nevarez and Christian Britton forced ties at five, six and seven goals apiece, with the latter coming 57 ticks into the second half. Britton's goal sparked a 5-0 run that put CBU up 11-7 about halfway through the third quarter.
Bucknell would not go away and knotted the score again at 11-11 with 1:05 left in the third. Matt Diacono came up big with a goal 17 seconds later to put CBU back up, 12-11, with 48 seconds to go.
Both defenses locked down from there and gave way to a 4:34 scoreless drought. Shore broke it with an insurance goal to make it 13-11 with 4:14 to play in the game. Lotero all but sealed the result by completing his hat trick with 1:32 remaining, making it 14-11.
