Lancers Measure Up to D-I Test

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Yet again, California Baptist University proved it can hang with NCAA Division I competition when it hosted Long Beach State for a "fourball" match on Saturday at Canyon Crest Country Club.
The Lancers played Long Beach State to a tie, as the top groups from each side both shot two-under par. CBU used three teams of two players and the 49ers played five two-player groupings. Fourball, or best ball, is a two-player team format in which each team gets to select their best score on each of the 18 holes played for the day. This format is regularly seen in Ryder and Solheim Cups.
"The reason we play this early event in the spring is to shake off the nerves, get the feeling of competition and play against a Division I school," Coach Marc Machado said. "We get excited to play any Division I school especially when it's in a fun team format. We want that tournament feel before we head into the spring. I take so many positives from this, even though it's a tie it sure feels like a win."
CBU's Sharon Oh and Yifei "Sunny" Wang shot a combined two-under to tie for the lowest score of the day, with LBSU's Euna Pak and Cara Barker.
"Their personalities really meshed well together, these groupings were made based on how their golf games and personalities fit," Machado said. "It was nice to see Sunny play for the first time since she transferred in. I am really excited to see her be a strong leader for us this spring."
The Lancers' Jordan Martin and Samantha Martirez and Kristyna Abrahamova and Erica Wang both shot one-under par to tie for third.
"I am just really proud of them," Machado said. "They showed a ton of heart and had awesome attitudes the whole round. They were steady the whole day."
CBU takes a short break before getting back to the second half of its season. The Lancers open the spring on Monday Feb. 5 at Point Loma's Reach Tournament at the Riverwalk Golf Club in San Diego.
"I am super excited for them and for what's to come this spring. They represented CBU and the team very well today. It was a fun match and I look forward to continuing this tradition with Division I schools."
