RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Fresh off Christmas break, California Baptist University showed no signs of a letup in a dominant 174-69 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a distance dual Friday afternoon.
Three different Lancers – Bernardo Valentim, Josh Fluetsch and Scott Tolman – set meet records on the day, while CBU won 11 of 13 events over the Stags overall.
"[During our vacation period,] we have been swimming and doing dry land workouts about seven hours a day," Coach Rick Rowland said. "We are really tired, but we had some really good performances despite all that. I am very happy."
There is little opportunity to rest as CBU boarded a bus shortly after the dual to head to Arizona for a dual with future NCAA Division I and Western Athletic Conference foe Grand Canyon Saturday at 1 p.m.
Fluetsch won the 1650-yard freestyle in 16 minutes, 53.62 seconds for the record, Tolman updated the 300 breaststroke pool and meet marks for the second year in a row with 3:12.04. Both Valentim and Jacob Leahy topped the previous 50 free meet record of 21.31, but Valentim (21.20) out touched Leahy (21.30).
On the diving end of the pool, Zach Parry won the 1-meter with 347.02 points and would have posted a new Lancer Aquatics Center record in the 3-meter with a 359.10, but CMS' Kendall Hollimon won it with a 412.42.
Zane Freeman qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships on both boards when he took third on the three-meter (339.07) and fourth at the one-meter dive (287.02). Garret Chew also took third on the 1-meter (307.58).
"Freshman Zane Freeman came in without a three-meter list and qualified on both boards today," Dive Coach Jeff Couto said. "I expect him to be top-16 in the nation.
"This week has been outstanding, the team's discipline, their determination and ability to adjust on the small things is incredible. It's fun to see the hard work pay off, just because you work hard doesn't mean you're going to get the results."
Jerome Heidrich headlined CBU's greatest showcase of strength in the 100 and 200 freestyles. The Lancers swept first through third in both events and even took fourth and fifth in the 200 free.
