Lancers Defeat Dixie State Again
1/8/2018 7:07:00 PM | Women's Basketball
ST. GEORGE, Utah – Three quarters through the second meeting between California Baptist University and Dixie State, there were four ties and several lead changes, with neither side leading by more than six points.
A fourth-quarter run guided the Lancers to a 57-50 win on the road in the Burns Arena, as they improve to 8-7, 5-2 in the PacWest and defeat Dixie State (7-8, 3-5) for the second time this season. CBU is back in action on Saturday when it welcomes conference-rival Azusa Pacific on Saturday at 5 p.m.
Tori Mitchell scored in double digits for the 13th time in 15 games this year, with 22 points, nine rebounds and three blocks in 27 minutes. Lexy Ram nearly completed a double-double, as well, with 16 points and nine boards.
Defense was the name of the game, though, as the Lancers held the Trailblazers to 28.6 percent from the field (18-for-63) and forced 17 turnovers. Georgia Dale continued to play a big role off the bench, with five steals, six rebounds and four points.
Appropriately enough, the score was tied, 44-44, going into the fourth quarter. Ram gave CBU the first lead of the final 10 minutes with a layup 38 seconds in, but an and-one put DSU back in front, 47-46.
The Lancers then ended the final eight minutes of the game on an 11-3 run to secure the victory. Emma Madsen started the charge with an offensive rebound and second-chance layup. CBU followed that with a Mitchell layup off an assist from Emma Meriggioli (six rebounds, three assists, two rebounds) and a Ram jumper to make it 52-47 Lancers with 5:30 remaining.
Dixie State broke the 6-0 run momentarily, but Ram scored four of the next five points to put the game away, with CBU leading 57-48 with 45 seconds left.
Mitchell did the heavy lifting in the first half, with 14 of the Lancers' 26 points, two blocks and three rebounds in 14 minutes. Ram scored 12 of her points in 17 second-half minutes.
