BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — For the second time in a week, California Baptist University and CSU Bakersfield faced off, this time in new territory on Saturday.
The date and location may have been different, but the result was the same, as the Lancers defeated the Roadrunners in five sets (23-25, 25-22, 25-20, 22-25, 15-11) in Bakersfield. CBU out hit CSUB .247 to .201 by limiting its attack errors.
With the win, the Lancers maintained atop the Western Athletic Conference standings with a 15-5, 6-2 in conference record. It also extends CBU's winning streak to four matches and keeps it an undefeated 5-0 in the fifth set this year. Bakersfield drops to 11-9, 4-3 in what was its first home loss of the season (8-1).
CBU will look to stay hot next week, with a trip to Chicago State on Thursday at 5 p.m. and home match versus Seattle U Saturday at 1 p.m.
Summer Avery put up an impressive double-double of 18 kills on a .378 percentage and 18 digs. Natalie Zimmerer and Tesa Oaks both had double-doubles, as well. Zimmerer logged 56 assists and 14 digs, while Oaks produced a team-high 20 kills and 10 digs.
Nicole Abreu set a new career-high of 26 digs in the match, which tied for the sixth most in CBU's NCAA era. Yagoda Jedrzejczak posted a team-high six blocks and Sydney Marks had five stuffs and eight kills on a .333 percentage. Megan Sester also had 11 kills for CBU.
Tied at 8-8, the Lancers had the first run to speak of in the fifth and final set. A combo block from Zimmerer and Jedrzejczak and an Oaks kill gave CBU a 10-8 edge.
CSUB fought back within a point, 11-10, but an Oaks kill, Bakersfield attack error and solo block from Jedrzejczak gave the Lancers match point, 14-10. Avery secured the win with her 18th kill of the day.
It helped CBU overcome losses in set one and four, much like its first win over Bakersfield in Riverside exactly a week before.
The Roadrunners won the first set 25-23 and threatened to take a two-set lead, up 18-16. A 4-0 run powered by two Sester kills and another from Marks gave CBU a 20-18 lead.
CSUB called timeout and battled back to a 21-21 tie. Consecutive Bakersfield errors, however, gave the Lancers a 23-21 edge and Jedrzejczak handed CBU set point with a kill, before teaming up with Oaks for a block to end it, 25-22.
Bakersfield came back and took a 12-9 lead in set three. Three points each from Jedrzejczak and two each from Oaks and Avery sparked an 11-1 run that put the Lancers ahead 20-13. CBU wouldn't let CSUB closer than four points en route to the 25-20 win.
