SAN JOSE, Calif. — One week exactly since it last played, California Baptist University traveled to San Jose State and grabbed a 1-0 shutout victory, with Preston Judd scoring his 12th goal of the year.
"I'm really happy for the guys," said Coach Coe Michaelson. "Today was a very difficult match and we have been on the wrong side of a lot of these tight matches, but we earned it today."
Just six minutes into the game, Judd got in behind the Spartan defense for a one-on-one chance with the goalkeeper. He got a shot off, but the SJSU keeper made the save to keep it scoreless early.
It was pretty back-and-forth from there as both teams had chances in the first 45 minutes.
Brian Gonzalez hoped to give CBU a goal just before halftime, firing off a chance from close range that was just wide of the frame.
Coming out of the break, Gonzalez played a ball for Judd to run onto on the left side. Judd beat his defender and got the byline pass off, but it was just out of reach of a Lancer runner in the box.
The Lancers got what they were looking for in the 63rd minute, countering off a SJSU attempt. Jordan Lane found Judd on the left side of the field, who nutmegged a defender and found the back of the net to put his team up 1-0. Judd leads the WAC and is tied for third-most goals in NCAA Division I with 12 so far on the year.
"I thought we created a lot of good chances up until we scored – we should have scored earlier – but after the goal we just defended and showed the grit to get through the significant pressure they put on us late."
San Jose State pressed for an equalizer late, even saw one cleared off the goal line by a CBU defender, but Albert Escuin finished with 10 saves in the game, the second-most in CBU's NCAA history.
"It was fantastic to have Gabriel Silva back and Albert made a few big saves, which you have to do to win these games on the road," said Michaelson.
CBU improves to 6-7-1 overall, 2-4 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Spartans, who came into the game sitting in third place in the WAC, drop to 5-6-2 on the year, 3-2-1 in conference. The Lancers head to Texas next week for a pair of games, taking on Incarnate Word on Friday at 5 p.m. and The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Sunday at 9 a.m. – both times Pacific.
"I'm really proud of the collective effort and hopefully this can help us start to rebuild some positive momentum in the final third of the season," said Michaelson.
