RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A record-setting crowd cheered on California Baptist University to a five-set win over cross-town foe UC Riverside in the CBU Events Center on Tuesday night.
A total 2,768 fans came out to see the Lancers and Highlanders play each other for the first time since 1997. CBU made its home fans happy with an exciting 25-21, 25-18, 18-25, 21-25, 15-13 victory, as the Lancers improved to 18-5 this season, 6-0 in five-set matches and extended their winning streak to seven straight.
"This was amazing, to get almost 2,800 people in there and it was rocking," Coach Branden Higa said. "This was a big-time environment and I think it says a lot about who we are as a university."
Tuesday's crowd shattered the previous record for a CBU home match of 1,054 that came during a match against Azusa Pacific in the Van Dyne Gym on Oct. 12, 2016. It was also a record for any CBU volleyball match, with the 2004 NAIA Championship on Dec. 4, which the Lancers won over Concordia at a neutral site, previously holding that honor at 1,170.
All those fans were treated to a thrilling match in the Events Center. The Lancers won the first two sets handily, but the Highlanders came charging back and evened things up to force a fifth set.
UC Riverside looked to close out the fifth and final game, up 10-7, but consecutive blocks from Yagoda Jedrzejczak and a kill each from Tesa Oaks and Megan Sester created a 4-0 run that put CBU ahead 11-10.
The Highlanders forced ties at 11-11 and 12-12, but Sester continued her hot hitting and killed the Lancers' final three points to secure the 15-13 victory. Sester, a true freshman, polished off a career-high 21 kills in the end.
"This team has come through time and again when it gets tight," Higa said. "I felt like if we could just hang in there and turn one or two plays the pressure is on them, especially in the fifth set. It kind of set up nicely for us to make that come-from-behind surge, and some players really stepped up big for us."
Natalie Zimmerer matched her career-best assist total with 60 to tie herself for the top spot in CBU's NCAA era, single-match history. The junior setter spread the wealth and also had nine digs, three blocks and three kills.
Summer Avery, Oaks and Sydney Marks all had at least 11 kills each. Avery had a monster double-double with 19 kills on a .370 percentage (19-2-46), 14 digs, five blocks and an ace. Oaks had a double-double, too, with 15 kills, 14 digs and an ace, while Marks hit .345 (11-1-29) and added five blocks and five digs.
Defensively, Nicole Abreu had a team-high 20 digs and Cassidy Dennison also had 13. Jedrzejczak also had five blocks to give the Lancers a big 11-6 advantage in the category.
CBU plays its final three home matches of the regular season over the next 10 days. The Lancers host Chicago State in the Van Dyne Gym Thursday at 7 p.m., Kansas City at 1 p.m. on Saturday and then Utah Valley for Senior Day Thursday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m.
