BOX SCORE
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A second-half surge led California Baptist University to its third win of the season over Concordia by a score of 14-8 on Thursday night at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
The 12th-ranked Lancers won the final 16 minutes of the game, 7-2, to hold off an Eagles team that got out to a hot start. It gives CBU's its third-straight 20-win season, as its record moves to 20-10 and 4-2 in the Western Water Polo Association.
"We were able to get our minds right," Coach Kevin Rosa said of the second-half turnaround. "The proverbial switch was flipped."
Dominick Nevarez led the offense with four goals and two assists, but Rosa praised the defense on Thursday. Nevarez had three steals, while Tanner Shore had five steals, two assists and a goal.
Matt Miller went from the bench into the cage in the first quarter for CBU and finished with 10 saves in about 26 minutes.
"Tanner did a really good job on the defensive end," Rosa said. "Miller played a majority of the game, for him to come in cold and play well the majority of the game was important."
Balance continued to be key for CBU, as four players scored multiple goals. Ryan Sargis had two goals, two assists and two steals, while Kyle Johnson added two goals, an assist and steal and Logan Mena scored twice, as well.
Concordia did a good job of starting fast on Thursday and held a 6-5 lead with 1:46 left in the second quarter. Goals from Johnson and Nevarez in the final 1:14 gave CBU a 7-6 lead going into halftime.
It sparked an 8-1 run that carried over into the fourth quarter for the Lancers. Nevarez scored four times in that span (twice on penalty shots), while Sargis, Shore and Mena also contributed. Sargis capped the run to give CBU a 13-7 lead with 4:13 to play.
There is one more WWPA and home game left to be played in the regular season, as the Lancers host Air Force for their Senior Day on Saturday at noon. Five CBU seniors will be honored before the game: Miller, Christian, Royce Daniel Laverne, Sargis and Shore.
A win will keep CBU in position to lock up anywhere from a second to fourth seed for the upcoming WWPA Championships at Fresno Pacific on Nov. 16-18. CBU is currently tied for third in the conference standings with Loyola Marymount (11-12, 4-2), while Air Force is right behind them in fifth (7-14, 3-3).
"Seeding is important, but there is no easy route in this conference," Rosa said. "What's more important than positioning is how you are playing and putting things together, because we need to be at our peak in two weeks. We just have to keep on improving on the little things that can make a big difference in a game."
