CBU Ensured Top-Four Finish in WAC

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – California Baptist University played the final Western Athletic Conference match of its first season in the conference at NM State on Saturday.
The Lancers continued to receive big performances, but fell to the Aggies, who won the 2017 regular-season WAC championship, in four sets (25-16, 11-25, 25-8, 25-20). NM State improved to 19-7, 9-4 in the conference, while CBU guaranteed itself a top-four finish in the conference standings.
It was an impressive debut season in the WAC for CBU, which is now 19-9 overall and 9-6 in the conference, after it was picked to finish eighth of nine teams in the conference's preseason poll. The Lancers have one more regular-season match left as they will travel to Cal State Fullerton for a 7 p.m. match, as they look to extend their streak of 20-win campaigns to four.
Nicole Abreu continued to anchor CBU's defense with 24 digs for an average of six a set on Saturday. Setter Natalie Zimmerer came close to yet another double-double, with 35 assists, nine digs and three kills.
Summer Avery put up 12 kills and seven digs for the Lancers, who also received 10 kills on a .286 percentage from Sydney Marks and eight and six kills, respectively, from Megan Sester and Yagoda Jedrzejczak (four digs, two blocks).
After dropping the first set, CBU flipped the script on NM State with a 25-11 victory in set two. The Lancers' offense was close to unstoppable and did not commit an error to post a .484 hitting percentage (15-0-31) in the game. Avery and Marks benefited the most from Zimmerer's sets in the set. Avery had five kills on 11 swings, while Marks added four kills on six attempts.
