Tulsa, Okla. — Milan Acquaah scored the final 11 of 14 points, including a half-court buzzer beater, for California Baptist, as it defeated Oral Roberts 70-69 in the Lancers' first true Division I game on Tuesday night.
The Lancers trailed 69-67 after ORU's Andrew Saunders hit a three-pointer with 3.2 seconds remaining. CBU quickly inbounded the ball as Acquaah dribbled down to halfcourt and let go of the game-winner as time expired.
Acquaah went on an 11-point scoring frenzy down the final stretch of the contest, starting with a pair of free throws, to give the Lancers a 58-57 lead with 6:22 remaining. On the following possession, Acquaah forced a steal and finished with a layup to extend CBU's lead to 60-57. With time winding down, Acquaah converted a layup to tie the game at 64-64 with 1:03 left. Jordan Heading, who scored a game-high 20 points, hit his fourth three-pointer of the night to give CBU a one-point advantage with 20 seconds on the clock.
ORU promptly advanced the ball down the court and used a timeout with 13 seconds remaining, to set up the go-ahead bucket by Saunders. It all led to the game-winning play for Acquaah, who finished with 16 points, five steals and four rebounds.
The 2018-19 season marks the first year CBU is competing at the NCAA Division I level and the Western Athletic Conference. It's the first win for the CBU program over a Division I opponent since defeating Southern Utah on Nov. 15, 2010. Last year, their final year in Division II, the Lancers won the West Regional and advanced to the Elite Eight.
ORU's home floor at the Mabee Center has been a tough place for opponents to play over the years. Since the start of the 2004-05 season, ORU entered tonight's game 140-40 (.777) at home. During that stretch, the Golden Eagles have at least 10 wins in eight of the 12 years, including a 15-0 regular season mark in 2011-12.
CBU took a 33-31 lead at intermission and was able to battle down the stretch to earn the victory. De'jon Davis had 15 points and six rebounds while Bul Kuol finished with eight points including two second-half dunks.
Emmanual Nzekwesi, a preseason All-Summit League Second Team selection, finished with a team-high of 17 points and nine rebounds for ORU.
The Lancers (2-0) remain in Oklahoma the rest of the week as they will face the University of Tulsa on Friday with a rare noon (CT) tip-off.
