11/16/2018 1:56:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Tulsa, Okla. – A near triple-double performance by Milan Acquaah and a barrage of three pointers by the Lancers ended up not being enough in a tightly-contested battle that featured nine lead changes. California Baptist fell at the University of Tulsa, 82-79, on Friday afternoon.
Acquaah made a pair of free throws with 12:49 left in the game that put the Lancers up by five points, the largest CBU lead of the game. However, Tulsa responded with a 5-0 run that evened the game and neither team would lead by more than three points the rest of the way.
Bul Kuol hit his fourth three pointer of the day to tie the game with 5:59 left in the contest. Kuol finished with 16 points on 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc while adding four rebounds.
The Lancers took a three point lead when Zach Pirog finished a layup while being fouled. Pirog converted the free throw putting CBU up, 72-69, with 5:19 remaining. Tulsa and CBU exchanged three pointers from there as well, as a pair of free throws by the Golden Hurricane made the score a 75-74 CBU advantage with 4:18 on the clock. Pirog pushed the lead back up to three at 77-74 for CBU with a dunk at the 3:35 mark.
However, Tulsa would finish the game on an 8-2 run that proved too much with a final score of 82-79. Tulsa's DaQuan Jefferies made a lay-up that gave TU the lead at 78-77 with 2:33 left in the game. Jefferies led the Golden Hurricane in scoring with 19 points and was a perfect 9-of-9 from the charity stripe.
There were 43 combined fouls called during the game with 28 of them coming in the second half. CBU was whistled 28 times, 19 of them in the second half, while TU was tagged with 15 fouls for the game.
The Lancers were able to tie the game one last time at 79-79 with 1:25 left as Pirog knocked down a pair of free throws. Pirog scored all seven of his points in the second half.
Much like Tuesday night when CBU defeated Oral Roberts, the final minute of the game was filled with drama. Tulsa held a one-point lead when Elijah Joiner missed the second of two free throws with 1:13 left that led to a CBU possession where it was unable to put any points on the board. TU's Jefferies was put on the line with 39 seconds remaining where he converted a pair of free throws to push the lead to the final score with the Lancers still very much in the game.
With 14 seconds left, Acquaah, who had already knock down five three pointers, was able to get a three pointer off as the shot clock was winding down. The rebound went out of bounds to give TU possession with 10.8 seconds left on the clock.
TU's Sterling Taplin was promptly fouled with 7.8 seconds left and missed a pair for free throws to give the Lancers hope.
With CBU having possession down three, Acquaah advanced the ball past half court and was put on the free-throw line after a foul by TU with 4.4 seconds left. Acquaah's first attempted shot rattled in-and-out. The second attempt also rimmed in-and-out and was fumbled around momentarily, ending in a jump ball with 0.1 seconds remaining. TU retained possession and was able to successfully inbound the ball to end the game.
Acquaah finished with 20 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds for CBU.
With the win, Tulsa's record moves to 3-0 this season. The Lancers are now 2-1 on the year and will take on sixth-ranked Nevada on Monday night.
