RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Following a solid first year in NCAA Division I for California Baptist University, Coach Adam Tribble announced the signing of seven new runners on Friday. It is the first recruiting class for Tribble, who is in his first year leading the Lancers.
"I'm excited about this group, and I feel this first installment of signees will help raise the bar and continue to move us in the right direction," Tribble said.
CBU added four new runners to an already formidable women's team in Cynthia Martin, Paige Haynes, Linda Palumbo and Marta Afonso Lourenco. The Lancer women won the Western Athletic Conference cross country championship in October, and ended the season ranked 11th in the West Region.
Martin and Haynes are both recruits out of Temecula. Martin preps at Chaparral High and holds a personal best time of 17 minutes, 7.4 seconds in the three mile. Haynes comes from Vista Murrieta High and owns a PR of 16:27.70 in the three mile and a 10:53.40 in the 3,200 meter.
"Cynthia has made great progress this cross country season, and I believe is just scratching the surface of what she's capable of. She's a fearless racer, and we're very glad she's coming to CBU," Tribble said. "Paige had a breakout junior cross country season before being sidelined with some nagging injuries. Healthy and moving in the right direction now, Paige should be set up for a great senior track season. I'm excited about her future, and I think her best days are yet to come."
Palumbo and Lourenco continue CBU's strong track record of international recruiting, as they will come to CBU from Italy and Portugal, respectively. Palumbo holds a personal best of 10:28.43 in the steeplechase, while Lourenco has a PR of 9:53.17 in the 3,000-meter run.
"Linda made huge strides this summer, and she actually qualified and raced at the World Junior Championships in Tampere, Finland in the steeplechase. She is scheduled to enroll in January, and should make an immediate impact for our team," Tribble said. "Marta is a versatile distance runner who I feel will adapt very well to the longer distances. Her 3K time from this summer puts her in line with some of the top high school distance seniors in the U.S. — very glad she's coming to CBU."
Three new faces: Cameron Hylton, Zlatko Kozuhar and Arturs Medveds will join the men's team, as well.
Hylton is another addition out of Temecula, currently attending Great Oak High. He has a personal best of 14:38.70 in the three mile.
"Cameron comes from one of the top high school programs in the nation. He's making great strides this fall so far, and I fully expect that to continue on for years to come," Tribble said.
Kozuhar and Medveds are both international recruits from Croatia and Latvia, respectively. Kozuhar's personal bests in the 3K and half marathon are 8:35.30 and 1:10:44, respectively.
"Zlatko is an aerobic machine who I feel will bring an incredible work ethic and appetite to train to the group. The longer the distance the better he runs, and I think he will thrive in the ideal training conditions we have. He should make an immediate impact for us," Tribble said.
Medveds specializes in the 10K and has a PR of 31:19 in the event.
"Arturs is also a long-distance guy, with the added ability to run the steeplechase, and he's run a variety of different distances as well over his career. He's also scheduled to enroll in January, and should make an immediate impact on our men's team."
