NEW ORLEANDS, La. – A historic season came to a close in the second round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship for California Baptist University in a loss to regional host Tulane on Friday.
It ends a terrific debut season for the Lancers in NCAA Division I, as they end 2018 with a 21-11 record. They will be remembered as the first team in CBU history to qualify for a national tournament in D-I.
Yagoda Jedrzejczak led CBU's offense on Friday night, with a career-high 11 kills, and also played a big role defensively, with three blocks. Nicole Abreu anchored the backline defense with 19 digs, while Natalie Zimmerer notched her third-straight double-double and fifth in six matches on 37 assists and 16 digs.
Tesa Oaks (nine kills, 10 digs, two blocks) and Summer Avery (eight kills, nine digs) both came close to double-doubles of their own, while Megan Sester notched 10 kills and Sydney Marks added six kills and three blocks.
Tulane improves to 27-8 after it took third in the American Conference behind two talented UCF and Cincinnati teams. It will host Valparaiso in the third round of the NIVC next week.
Offensively, the Lancers were led by Jedrzejczak, Sester and Oaks in set one, as they combined for 10 kills, with four coming from Jedrzejczak. Tulane still managed to win the opener, 25-18, and then took set two, 25-15.
Jedrzejczak came up big for the Lancers out the break, scoring three-straight points for her team with kills to give CBU set point, 24-20. Avery killed the final point to avoid overtime, with a 25-22 win.
The Lancers enjoyed advantages in blocks (6-5) and aces (4-3) in the match. Elizabeth Gilley and Katelyn Vander Tuig each had two aces on the night for CBU.
While the losses of seniors Vander Tuig and Avery will certainly hurt, CBU has a lot to look forward in the years to come, armed with an impressive young team ready to compete and succeed in Division I.
