RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Four scorers in double-figures helped lead the way as California Baptist University men's basketball opened the season with an 87-71 victory over San Diego Christian on Friday night.
An Events Center record crowd of 5,089 was on hand to witness the program's first victory as a member of NCAA Division I.
After the game, CBU head coach Rick Croy said, "The turnout. The support. We don't take it for granted. I've been coaching in California for 20 years. This isn't happening everywhere. This is special. Not only to have 5,000, but to have 5,000 into it the entire game."
The Lancers were on fire from outside throughout the night. CBU as a team went 16-of-32 from beyond the arc. Jeremy Smith connected on five three pointers and finished with 17 points while adding a pair of steals. Smith along with Milan Acquaah, Jordan Heading and Ty Rowell combined for all 16 makes on 28 attempts.
San Diego Christian entered the game 1-1 overall picking up a victory last night at La Sierra. However, tonight's contest did not count toward their record as it was an exhibition game for the visitors.
The Lancers (1-0) will hit the road for six straight contests starting with Oral Roberts on Tuesday night in Tulsa, Okla. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
