Heading, Acquaah Lead Lancers Past Lions

HAMMOND, La. – Jordan Heading and Milan Acquaah combined for 46 points – 30 in the second half alone - as California Baptist (6-5) defeated the reigning Southland Conference champion Southeastern Louisiana (4-6), 73-52, at the University Center on Monday night. CBU has won four of its last five games.
Acquaah led the way for the Lancers in the first half scoring 10 points on 2-of-2 shooting from three-point range as both teams struggled to establish a flow to the game. CBU led at the break, 25-18.
The Lancers turned it up a notch and outscored Southeastern 48-34 on 67 percent shooting from the field in the final 20 minutes of play. Heading posted a season-high 24 points for the game with 18 coming in the second half. CBU was sparked by a Heading jumper giving the Lancers a 36-26 lead with 15:49 on the clock.
CBU outscored the Lions by 14 points in the final 16 minutes of the contest growing the lead to a game-high 21 points on a three pointer by Jeremy Smith with 3:40 remaining. The trey capped a 32-18 run over a 12:38 span where Heading chipped in 14 points. The Lancers would hold steady with the 21-point advantage until the final buzzer.
De'jon Davis tallied eight points and 11 rebounds for the Lancers.
Marlain Veal led Southeastern with 19 points tonight. The Lions were picked second in the Southland Conference preseason poll behind Stephen F. Austin after winning the regular season title a year ago. The Lions fell to SFA in the tournament championship game last season and advanced to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) eventually falling to St. Mary's (CA) to end the successful campaign.
CBU remains on the road in the state of Louisiana and will take on Southern University on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. It will be the eighth game away from home out the last 11 contests played for the Lancers.
