RENO, Nev. – California Baptist University took 11th place in Thursday's Reno Tournament of Champions. Zander Silva led the way with his fifth-place finish serving as a team best for the tournament.
Silva started off in dominant fashion, defeating Hunter Hohman via technical fall. The redshirt freshman's second match of the day was much closer, with Silva falling to Michigan State's Austin Eicher in a 3-1 decision.
That loss would be Silva's last of the day, as he rattled off five consecutive wins en route to a fifth-place finish. He defeated Steven Abbate via 11-0 major decision and CSU Bakersfield's Noah Blakley-Beanes in a 5-0 decision and then earned medical forfeits over Michael Magaldo and Jack Mutchnik. Silva defeated Michigan State's Alex Hrisopoulos with a 6-4 decision.
Daxton Gordon recorded wins in his first two matches before withdrawing from the tournament. CBU was also represented by Adam Velasquez, Antonio Saldate, Bryce Buckley, Frank Wyshinski, Garrett Strang, Jacob Cooper, John Halajian, Jonathan Zhang, Mark Halajian, Michael Loyola, Vincent Zavala and Zach Schrader in Reno.
The Lancers return to action in 2019, when they travel to Fresno State for a duel against the Bulldogs on January 3.
