CARSON, Calif. – After being held to five runs in the first two games of the season, California Baptist University's offense erupted for a 15-4 win in the series finale at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday afternoon.
CBU hit three home runs in the game, with Ryan Williams going 4-for-5 with two home runs, five runs batted in, three more scored and a double, to improve to 2-1 after its first weekend of play and drop the Toros to 1-2.
Tommy Bell and John Glenn both went 3-for-5 in the win. Bell drove in three runs, scored three more of his own, doubled and hit CBU's third homer of the contest. Glenn scored twice and had an RBI double, as well. Kyle Oyama impressed in his first start of the season after he went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a triple, as the Lancers combined for seven extra-base hits in the game overall.
The Lancers begin an 11-game home stand next week when they host Colorado Christian for three games Thursday through Saturday. First pitch is at 6 p.m. the first two days, with the finale set for a noon start Saturday at Totman Stadium.
Andrew Bash earned the win after throwing the first five innings on the mound for CBU Saturday. He gave up two runs on four hits, a walk and struck out three. Angel Delgado pitched the next two innings and allowed one earned run, three hits and struck out a batter of his own.
True freshman Jorge Valerio made quite the first impression for the Lancers by shutting down the Toros over the final two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four.
Williams got the offense rolling when he led off the third inning with a 2-1 homer to left field. It appeared to get into the head of the Toros' pitcher, as he walked two of the next three batters – Harrison Spohn and Oyama -- on five pitches each. Two-out singles from Bell and Ryan Mota scored Spohn and Oyama, while a Glenn double brought in Bell to give the Lancers a 4-0 lead.
CBU did damage with two outs in the fourth, as a full-count walk to Angelo Capolupo and Oyama's triple added another CBU run in the top of the fourth. Cal State Dominguez Hills kept things close with a two-run fourth that included three hits and a sacrifice fly to cut CBU's lead to 5-2.
The Lancers quickly took back momentum and boosted their lead to 10-2 with a five-run fifth. Bell started the inning with a double and the bases were loaded when Mota was hit by a pitch and Glenn singled.
Billy Rockefeller drew a four-pitch walk to score Bell and then Williams singled to left to plate Mota. Capolupo drove in a run with a grounder to third and Oyama singled home two more runs to make it 10-2.
A two-out rally got the Lancers two more runs in the sixth. Glenn and Rockefeller both singled with and Williams brought them both home with a double to left field. Home runs from Bell, which scored two runs, and Wililams in the seventh and eighth, respectively, capped the scoring for the Lancers.
