Taking on a New Challenge

COSTA MESA, Calif. – For the first time in history, California Baptist University's cheer team took on a new challenge: STUNT competition.
The Lancers beat Vanguard 15-11, but fell 14-13 to Concordia University of Irvine. CBU starts its STUNT record at 1-1, while the Lions begin 0-2 and the Eagles open 2-0.
STUNT is a traditional team sport derived from cheerleading. It focuses on the technical and athletic components of cheer, including partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, group jumps and tumbling. These elements are put together in short routines that both teams must perform head-to-head on the floor at the same time over the course of four quarters.
Officials award points based on execution only. The first quarter is partner stunts, second is pyramids, third consists of baskets and tosses, while the fourth is a team routine. In the first three quarters, there are four rounds where both teams can score 0-1 points. In the fourth – which consists of team routines combining the elements of the first three quarters – the point values can go up to three.
"Today was our first experience with STUNT and I am very pleased with how it went," said Coach Tami Fleming. "The athletes are already loving the sport and can't wait for the next game. It was a tremendous opportunity for the team to work together and excel in this new area of sport cheerleading."
CBU had a 13-8 lead over Vanguard going into the final quarter and secured the 15-11 victory.
In the nightcap, the Lancers were even, 5-5, with the Eagles after the first two periods. CBU took a one-point lead in the third, 8-7, but ultimately dropped the one-point game, 14-13.
CBU resumes its traditional cheer competition – in which it hasn't surrendered a loss since 2012 – next week as it competes at the USA College Championship, Feb. 24-25 in Anaheim, Calif., looking for its seventh USA Championship. The Lancers then get back to STUNT on March 3 for a pair of games as they take on Cal Poly and Vanguard at Riverside City College.
"We will get back in the gym and continue to clean up our skills before the next STUNT tournament on March 3," said Fleming.
