CLAREMONT, Calif. — California Baptist University men's and women's track teams kicked off the 2018 season Saturday at the Rossi Relays, hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
It was a great day for the Lancers – who all competed in the 3,000-meter race – as the men saw four runners place in the top-10 and the women saw Emeline Delanis set a new school record.
"We were just happy to start our season with so many strong performances and top-10 CBU marks," said Coach Ben Gall.
On the men's side, true freshman McMarshall Hartzenburg led in his first-ever collegiate track competition, taking third overall in eight minutes, 30.43 seconds. Simon Bedard followed in fourth (8:31.86), while Pierre-Louis Detourbe was just on his tail in fifth with a time of 8:33.12. Both times were good for new personal records for the pair.
Dennis Messmer followed with a time of 8:37.33, while Micro Zenzen crossed the finished line 8:51.43. William Ernest and Jayden Emerson were neck and neck in the final sprint, with final times of 8:55.23 and 8:55.36, respectively.
In the women's race, Delanis took first overall in a new CBU record time of 9:47.80, giving her a new personal-best time.
Teammate Anett Somogyi was right on her tail, finishing in second place with a new personal-best time of 9:53.07, while Fruzsi Ladanyi came sprinting in to round out third place in 9:56.04.
CBU ultimately had six individuals finish in the top-10, dominating the heat from start to finish. Kim Rabenstein posted a time of 10:01.85, followed by Leanda du Bruyn (10:05.55) and Kate Robinson (10:10.17). Tori Dutchover and Katie Deimling each ran their personal bests, clocking in in 10:34.63 and 10:40.08, respectively.
"We're very excited to get our season going," added Gall. "Everyone was a little rusty but we're happy to be competing again after so long without any competition."
Next up, the Lancers head to Eagle Rock, Calif., for the Occidental Distance Carnival on March 10, where CBU will look to keep momentum rolling early on in the season.
