Seven In a Row

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Seven might be a lucky number for some teams, but luck didn't really play a factor in California Baptist University's seventh-straight United Spirit Association (USA) College Championship.
The Lancers won the All-Girls Four-Year title, despite sitting in second place after Day 1 with 69.70 points, after missing a game day routine, and saw both of their stunt groups place in the top-two among NCAA Division I teams.
Since the first day's scores make up 30-percent of the final score, CBU knew it had the opportunity to build on that score on the second day, finding itself trailing by nine points, with Fresno Pacific sitting in first with 78.60 points. The Lancers didn't let the Day 1 scores distract, executing both the game day cheer and overall performance well to finish with 86.08 points. It bested the Sunbirds, who finished in second with 80.63 points.
"We have a skilled enough team to recover from a setback like that and make up the deficit," said Coach Tami Fleming. "That was our seventh consecutive USA Championship. We're proud of that and it's always our goal to have zero-deduction routines and we had two."
CBU also had two stunt groups perform for the first time at the USA Championship, with Taylor Contratto, Dazmyn Dull, Evynn Richard and Jordan Arrington taking first place (91.83 points). Kacie Gonzales, Taylor Frasca, Alexis Humphrey and Breanna Krombs teamed up to take second (89.10 points).
The Lancers beat out multiple Division I groups, including Sacramento State (third), Angelo State (fourth), UC Santa Barbara (fifth) and University of Arizona (sixth).
CBU takes a break from traditional cheer competition with its second pair of STUNT games next weekend at Riverside City College. The Lancers play Cal Poly at 9:30 a.m., before taking on Vanguard for the second time this year at 11 a.m.
