Keeping Hot at the Plate

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Hours after moving up three spots in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll, No. 14-ranked California Baptist University stayed hot and grabbed 7-1 and 5-2 victories over Notre Dame de Namur Wednesday night.
The Lancers improve to 28-5 overall and 20-2 in the PacWest with the sweep. The Argonauts drop to 11-30 on the year, 7-13 in conference.
Despite going down two outs in the bottom of the first, CBU took the first lead off an RBI single from Hannah Thieroff, 1-0.
NDNU responded back in the top of the second to tie the game 1-1, but the Lancers took back their lead in the third. Caitlyn Lloyd led off with a walk and was joined on base by Brittany Galvez, who singled aboard. The duo made their way to third and second, respectively, before coming home on a Thieroff single to right field, 3-1.
The Lancers tacked on some insurance in the bottom of the fourth as Anise Avalos led the frame off with a walk and came home on a Lloyd double just inside the left field foul line, 4-1. The Argonauts threatened to end the inning with a second out, but Soraya Shahbazian blasted a home run to left field to give CBU a 6-1 upper hand.
In the bottom of the sixth, Lloyd drilled a solo homer to increase the Lancers' lead to 7-1, threatening to put the run rule in play. NDNU managed to get two outs, but Shahbazian kept the inning going with a standup double over the right fielder's head.
NDNU prevented the mercy rule from happening, however, but CBU took down the Argonauts in order to seal the 7-1 victory.
Ciara Stapp finished with nine strikeouts in seven innings pitched for her 14th win of the season.
In the nightcap, the Argonauts struck first in the top of the first, taking a 1-0 lead, but CBU responded right away. With Galvez on first, Shahbazian doubled down the left-field line and Galvez turned on the jets to even the game up, 1-1.
CBU took over the lead in the bottom of the third after Galvez led off with a double to left center and was joined on base by Thieroff (base hit). Alley Johnson took over the running duties for Thieroff and teased a throw to second as she got halfway to the base, allowing Galvez to steal home, 2-1.
Ali Subia then stepped up to the plate and turned on a pitch, sending it over the fence at dead center to increase CBU's lead to 4-1.
NDNU cut the margin in half with a solo homer in the top of the fourth, 4-2.
CBU got the run back in the bottom half of the inning, once again as Galvez came sprinting home all the way from first on a two-out double from Shahbazian, 5-2
Iveth Alvarado finished with a career-high six strikeouts for the win, while Stapp finished with her second save of the year.
CBU turns right around to travel to No. 6-ranked Dixie State for a four-game series, with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. Pacific on Friday in St. George, Utah. The Lancers hold a slight lead over the Trailblazers (32-4, 16-4 conference) in the PacWest standings.
