Lancers Give Baber Win No. 300

ST. GEORGE, Utah — In what could be the deciding series for the PacWest Championship, there was bound to be some dramatics in the opening doubleheader Friday afternoon. No. 14-ranked California Baptist University just dropped a 4-3 loss in the first game, but rallied for a 7-3 victory in the nightcap to award Coach Bill Baber his 300th career win. Ironically enough, Baber also grabbed win No. 100 in St. George, Utah.
The Lancers sit 29-6 on the year, 21-3 in the PacWest with the results. The Trailblazers hold a 33-5 mark, 17-5 in conference. CBU still holds the first-place spot in the PacWest standings, with DSU right on its trail in second place.
Dixie State took a two-run lead after the first inning, but CBU responded with a run of its own in the top of the second. Halle Rosario made her way to third on a Trailblazer error and Anise Avalos singled through the left side to send her home, 2-1.
Unfortunately, the Trailblazers struck again in the bottom half of the frame to take a 4-1 lead, but the Lancers kept battling. Hannah Thieroff knocked a solo home run in the top of the third, 4-2, before Rosario blasted a long ball of her own in the sixth, 4-3.
Caitlyn Lloyd singled to lead off the top of the seventh as the Lancers looked to rally for the tying run, but she was left stranded as Dixie State grabbed the next three outs to seal the 4-3 result.
CBU exploded off to a solid start in the nightcap, scoring four runs in the top of the second. Cheyann Tucker got the inning going with a double down the left-field line and came home on an Avalos base hit, 1-0. Amanda Springstead joined Avalos on base with a single up the middle, before Lloyd drilled a no-doubter to center field to put the Lancers up 4-0.
Dixie State responded with a home run of its own in the bottom half of the inning, 4-1, but the Lancers were hungry for more.
Soraya Shahbazian drew a leadoff walk in the fifth and Thieroff rocketed another home run over the fence to increase CBU's lead to 6-1.
The Lancers added another insurance run in the top of the sixth off three hits. Springstead led the frame off with a base hit and Diana Gomez took over the base running. Lloyd sacrificed a bunt to advance her to second and a Brittany Galvez single put runners on the corners. Shahbazian then stepped up and drilled a base hit through the third baseman-shortstop gap to score Gomez, 7-1.
Despite CBU loading up the bases, the Trailblazers managed to get out of the inning with just the one run.
Dixie State put on its rally caps in the bottom of the seventh, needing six runs just to tie the game. The Trailblazers were able to get two, 7-3, but that was all Iveth Alvarado and her defense would allow. She finished with a career-high nine strikeouts to remain undefeated on the year (4-0).
CBU and DSU close out the four-game series Saturday with another doubleheader, scheduled for an 11 a.m. Pacific start time.
