MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – Its finest round of the tournament so far moved California Baptist University up to a 14th-place finish at the NCAA Division II Championships on Wednesday.
Two Lancers produced below-par rounds, while all four shot 75 or better to give their team a four-over total of 292 in the third round and a 54-hole total of 892 (300-300-292) at the RTJ Golf Trail's Fighting Joe course. CBU's season came to an end, as it missed the top-eight cut needed to advance to Thursday's match play.
Nevertheless, CBU defied the rankings for the third year in a row by taking 14th after it came into the tournament ranked 24th in D-II. Second-ranked Florida Southern (840), No. 3 Barry (846) and fourth-ranked Lynn (848) secured top-three finishes at the end of stroke play, while Florida Southern's John VanDerLaan occupied the top individual spot with a 199.
The Lancers will transition to Division I and the Western Athletic Conference next year, and leave D-II having qualified for the last three national tournaments.
Freshman Ryan Monsalve and senior Greg Gonzalez both shot one-under 71 on Wednesday to lead CBU. Monsalve got out to a great start on Wednesday, with four birdies on his first five holes powering him to a subpar round. It was the same story for Gonzalez, as he birdied each of his first four holes and wound up with six overall.
Ben Hallam and Matt Harris both turned in 75s to score for CBU in the third round. Both were very consistent, as Hallam logged 16 pars and no birdies to shoot three-over, while Harris birdied just once and had 15 pars in matching him. Dan Heron logged a 78 to miss out on scoring honors.
Monsalve and Hallam put together the best individual finishes for the Lancers on the week. Monsalve tied for 32nd with a 217 (76-70-71) after he had two below-par rounds to finish the season, while Hallam came in 44th with a 221 (72-74-75).
Gonzalez logged his best round of the week by five strokes to shoot 14 spots up the leaderboard to 70th on a 225 (76-78-71). Harris came in 88th with a 232 (79-78-75) after turning in his best round of the week Wednesday. Heron logged a 238 (76-8-4-78) to take 100th.
