Going Long with the Locals

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Just a few miles away from home, California Baptist University took on local foe UC Riverside Saturday night under the lights. It took almost 100 minutes, but the Highlanders managed to pull out the 2-1 result over the Lancers in their first matchup since 2010.
CBU drops to 5-3-1 overall, while UCR improves to 1-7-1.
"We knew that UCR's record was misleading, but that's a disappointing result on the balance of play today," said Coach Coe Michaelson. "They hit an amazing goal to get back in it, but the way the game was going, it felt like only a matter of time [for us to score again]."
The Lancers out-shot the Highlanders 13-to-7, including a 7-to-4 shots-on-goal advantage.
CBU had the run of play for most of the game, despite going into halftime in a scoreless draw with UCR.
Preston Judd finally broke through for the Lancers in the 69th minute, scoring his 11th goal of the year. Sebastian Wiesbock laid off a brilliant through ball in behind the UCR defense, allowing Judd to cut in and go one-on-one with the goalkeeper, finishing it into the back of the net.
Unfortunately, four minutes later the Highlanders equalized, 1-1. Still, the Lancers kept pressing.
In the 79th minute, Wiesbock drove in another beautiful ball into the box, connecting with Niklas Haakenstad's head, but the UCR goalkeeper made a diving save off the line to keep things even at 1-1.
With seconds counting down, Brian Gonzalez looked like he might provide some late heroics with a header of his own on frame, but once again the goalkeeper managed to step in front to send the game into overtime.
The Lancers continued the extra time with momentum in their favor until the 100th minute.
"The one thing that can't happen, happens," said Michaelson. "They get a deep free kick, send numbers forward and come out of it with a penalty."
With just 20 seconds left in the first period, the ref blew his whistle and pointed to the penalty spot to award the Highlanders a penalty kick. UCR's Dusan Keca converted the PK to end the game 2-1 in favor of the home team.
"I'm proud of our effort and our play today, but in soccer you don't get what you deserve sometimes," said Michaelson. "We have to move on and get focused for conference play, because we have a very difficult run of games in front of us."
CBU resumes Western Athletic Conference action from here on out, hoping to build on its first WAC win last week over preseason favorite Seattle U. The Lancers head to UNLV for a Friday night contest, kicking off at 7 p.m.
