OREM, Utah – For the first time, California Baptist University played a road match in the Western Athletic Conference on Thursday morning.
It turned out to be quite the rollercoaster ride, but the Lancers pulled out the five-set win in overtime (25-16, 25-18, 14-25, 17-25, 17-15) in Utah Valley's Lockhart Arena. CBU improves to 11-4, 2-1 in the WAC and the Wolverines drop to 8-8, 0-3 in conference.
"It was a great win in a great environment," Coach Branden Higa said. "There were a lot of people who were really vocal and it made for an awesome environment."
The Lancers now head to the University of Missouri-Kansas City to take on one of the three undefeated teams remaining the WAC on Saturday at 11 a.m. Pacific.
CBU put itself in great position on Thursday by winning the first two sets handily and then jumping out to a 7-1 lead in the fifth. Utah Valley made adjustment after adjustment to stay in the match, though, and came all the way back to take a 13-11 lead late in set five. The Wolverines even held match point twice – 14-13 and 15-14 – in the final game.
"All year, we have talked about being poised and being in control of our emotions," Higa said. "In the fifth set, we knew it was the team that was going to focus and execute better that would win it. It was a wild set, but that was us. We ended up making the plays when it mattered most down the stretch."
The Lancers had a response each and every time. Down 13-11, Summer Avery came up with consecutive kills to tie things at 13-13. An attack error from UVU forced at 14-14 tie and then a combo block from Avery and Sydney Marks evened the score again at 15-15.
Megan Sester provided her match-high 17th kill to then hand the Lancers match point, 16-15. A Wolverine setting error secured the victory for CBU. The Lancers started the fifth set on a 7-1 run, thanks to two kills from Sester and consecutive aces from Tesa Oaks.
"We knew it was all up for grabs in set five, and that was really a microcosm of what went on in the whole match," Higa said. "We would go up big, they would battle back and pull ahead, but we were able to stick it out in the end."
CBU put up big numbers at the net and the service line, with 12 blocks and 11 aces as a team, on Thursday. Sester led the offense with 17 kills on a .349 percentage (17-2-43), while Avery added 12 kills, 10 digs, eight blocks and three aces.
"Summer absolutely stepped up when we needed her to," Higa said. "She had a couple of kills and a block that saved match point for us. She has been really steady for us all year, and for her to show up in the fifth set like that was just huge, that's just who she is."
Natalie Zimmerer spread out 44 assists and also had eight digs and three kills at setter. Tesa Oaks finished with a double-double herself on 12 kills, 11 digs and four aces.
Defensively, Yagoda Jedrzejczak joined Avery with a team-high eight blocks, Nicole Abreu had a team-high 19 digs and Cassidy Dennison was the fourth Lancer with double-digit digs (11) to go along with two aces.
A combination of blocking, serving and Sester's hitting led CBU to a 25-16 win in set one. Sester had five kills on a .333 percentage (5-1-12), while the Lancers also had four aces and four blocks, with Avery posting two each in the opener.
CBU started the match with a 5-1 run and then broke a 5-5 tie with an 8-2 run started by a kill and ace, back-to-back from Avery. Oaks and Sester added a kill to the run, which was capped with an Elizabeth Gilley ace to make it 13-7 CBU.
Utah Valley fought back within two points, 14-12, but a Wolverine attack error gave CBU side out and fed into a 9-2 run. The charge was highlighted by three blocks, with Sydney Marks providing two of them, and three Sester kills. Dennison aced the final point of the set for the victory.
The Wolverines took an 8-5 lead early on in set two, but a 5-1 run highlighted by a block and kill from Marks, an ace from Avery and a Zimmerer kill gave CBU a 16-14 edge. Utah Valley never really got back into it, as the Lancers finished the set on a 14-5 run. Three of CBU's final eight points came on blocks, with Jedrzejczak being involved with all three and Avery getting in there twice.
