SEATTLE — In its first Western Athletic Conference game, California Baptist University drew a tough opponent in Seattle U. The Redhawks — who have won seven WAC titles since 2013 and have played in five-straight WAC tournament finals — grabbed a 4-0 victory over the Lancers Friday night.
CBU drops to 7-2-1 overall, 0-1-0 in conference, while Seattle U improves to 3-6-2, 1-0-0.
"To Seattle U's credit, they played very well at home tonight and showed why they're a preseason favorite to win the WAC," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "Frankly we had an off game and were not as sharp in our execution as we needed to be."
Romy Salvador had to come up big for the Lancers on numerous occasions, finishing with seven saves in the game to try to keep her team in the game.
The Redhawks held a 1-0 lead at halftime, despite CBU creating some chances in their defensive third. Unfortunately, Seattle U kept pressing and found two more to hold a 3-0 lead late in the game.
Miranda Martinez gave CBU its most dangerous chance in the 83rd minute, redirecting a corner kick toward the goal, but it was just a little too high.
Seattle U capped the 4-0 victory with less than a minute on the clock to take the game.
The Lancers will look to rebound at Chicago State as they head to the Windy City for an 11 a.m. (Pacific) game.
"Playing on the road is always challenging and we knew this would be a difficult road trip with a Seattle to Chicago opening weekend for conference play," said St. Clair. "At this level, the margins are small, but now it's all about the next match. We'll make the adjustments needed and begin preparing for Chicago State on Sunday."
