CHICAGO — California Baptist University put on a show Sunday with a dominant 6-0 victory over Chicago State to grab its first Western Athletic Conference win.
"I'm very proud of the team for bouncing back and responding with a dominant performance today," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "We got back to playing CBU soccer and focusing on the intangibles that we can control in the game. I thought our attacking play was sharp today and it was great to see multiple players scoring goals. We need to continue to focus on one game at a time and our execution for 90 minutes."
The Lancers had an impressive offensive performance with 24 shots on goal for six goals – which is second-most in the NCAA era for CBU – with five different goal scorers, led by Lanai Navarro with two on the day.
"There is no better feeling than when the ball hits the back of the net and getting two today makes me feel like I'm on cloud nine," said Navarro. "The girls played with so much heart and determination. We were able to possess and connect our passes a ton today and we're determined to keep it going."
The Lancers improve to 8-2-1 overall, 1-1-0 in the WAC, while the Cougars drop to 0-10-1 on the year, 0-2-0 in conference.
It didn't take much time at all for the Lancer show to start as Erin Gallagher put the visitors on the board in the sixth minute of action. Jordan Dow drove a ball over to Rebecca Romero, who found Gallagher for her first collegiate goal.
CBU kept the pressure on CSU and added a second goal just before the break. In the 45th minute, Navarro netted her first goal of the year off an assist from Miranda Martinez.
The Lancers went into halftime out-shooting the Cougars 15-to-5, including an 8-to-4 shots-on-goal ratio.
Chicago State tried to put something together to start the second half, but Romy Salvador made an easy save less than 90 seconds into the frame to keep her clean sheet in tact. She finished the game with seven saves, while Carissa Christensen came in for the last 36 minutes of the match and posted two saves.
Two minutes later, CBU struck again. After drawing a foul deep in Cougar territory, Desarae Felix collected the ball off the free kick and found Miranda Hald, who tucked it away, 3-0. Almost two minutes exactly after that, Felix found the back of the net for her eighth goal of the year.
CBU was determined to put an exclamation point on its first WAC victory and didn't take its foot off the gas. Elisa Soderholm got in on the scoring action in the 62nd minute after dribbling down the side of the field and firing off a shot from 20 yards out.
Less than three minutes later, Navarro capped the scoring with her second of the game to put the Lancers in front 6-0. Dow created some distance from her defender and laid off a ball to Navarro, who drove it home.
It could have been even worse as CBU finished with a 36-to-12 shot advantage, including a 24-to-9 shots-on-goal upper hand.
The Lancers return home to host NM State on Friday at 1 p.m., looking to keep building on their inaugural Division I season and carry momentum from today's victory forward.
