LOS ANGELES, Calif. – California Baptist University divers took on a new challenge Sunday at the UCLA Dive Invite, taking dives from the platform to wrap up a busy weekend of competition.
"This has been a long week of competition, but we wouldn't trade it for anything," Dive Coach Jeff Couto said. "What stood out to me the most was the athletes' tenacity and courage, as they were competing against athletes who have been diving platform for the majority of their lives. I am encouraged to see where the Lancer divers are matching up."
CBU returns to action in six days, heading to Malibu for a tri-dual meet against Pepperdine and Air Force on Saturday.
On the men's side, Garret Chew qualified for the finals and finished 10th overall with 530.80 points. Zane Freeman (238.90) and Tyler Stevens (220.75) just missed the cut for the finals, taking 13th and 14th place, respectively.
"These two [Freeman and Stevens] were right there," Couto said. "If they would have been more consistent in their last few dives they would also have made the finals."
On the women's side, Emily Dunkerson, Kiree Lowe and Janae Jizmejian had the platform all to themselves for an exhibition, with platform competition taking place for the women yesterday.
For Dunkerson and Jizmejian, this was their collegiate debut io the platform. Dunkerson scored a 209.55, while Lowe had a 169.65 and Jizmejian tallied a 132.65.
"It was Dunkerson's first platform contest and she amassed enough points to get the school record," Couto said. "Kiree continues to improve and with great confidence, and I believe she is going to be a standout at the WAC Championships. [Jizmejian] was also impressive. Any time you can average around sixes per dive, the athlete is doing things right."
