
Cienega, Rhodes Double Winners in CBU's Opener

MALIBU – Nicole Cienega and Isabella Rhodes both won two individual events in California Baptist University's season opener at the Malibu Invite on Saturday.
Cienega and Rhodes accounted for four of the Lancers' seven individual wins at Pepperdine's Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool. It helped the Lancers take second place among the NCAA Division I teams in attendance, with 176.5 points. Texas Christian finished on top with 280, while host Pepperdine took third (148.5) to CBU.
Cienega and Rhodes dominated the short butterfly and freestyle events. Cienega won both the 100 and 200 butterflies, with respective times of 57.40 seconds and 2:06.34, while Rhodes was victorious in the 50 (24.10) and 100 frees (52.28).
Highly-touted freshman Mackenzie Degn made a big debut for the Lancers, as she won the 200 free in 1:52.12 and took second in the 500 free (5:07.26). Sophomore Rebeca Oviedo was the only swimmer to beat out Degn in the 500 free, as she won it in 5:03.69.
Faith Brazil and Mackenzie Mergel finished first and third in the 200 breast, with respective times of 2:21.33 and 2:24.66. It was the second event in which the Lancers had two top-three swimmers, as Elizabeth Brouwer took third in the 100 fly (59.00) not far off the winner, Cienega.
The Lancers will split their swim and dive squads next weekend. The swimmers will head to CSU Bakersfield for the Sprint Classic on Friday at 2 p.m. and the Roadrunner Invite Saturday at 10 a.m. The divers will take part in the Lancer Diving Invite back in Riverside on Saturday at 10 a.m.
