COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Both California Baptist University teams had very successful mornings at Texas A&M's Arturo Barrios Invitational on Saturday. The women took the team title for the third time this season after posting the third fastest 6k team time in school history, while the men broke the school record for 8k team time in the school record books.
The women's race was a tight one which saw CBU post a 75 team score for first place and Middle Tennessee State posting an 81 for second. Florida claimed third place with a 117, and won the individual title; Texas A&M scored 121 for fourth and Arizona State claimed fifth with a 146.
Emilie Renaud led the charge for the Lancers, crossing the line at 20:39.5—the seventh fastest 6k time in school history—for a ninth place finish. Fruzsi Ladanyi was the 12th across the line with a 20:45.9—the 11th fastest 6k time in school history—and Andrea Kolbeinsdottir took 19th place as well as the 23rd fastest time in school history with a 21:04.6 time.
After CBU's first three runners had crossed the line the Lancers had a team score of 38, while Middle Tennessee State had a 22 team score. The four, five, six, and seven runners proved to win the day for CBU after that, as Elin Brink (20th, 21:05.5), Anett Somogyi (21st, 21:05.7), and Karolina Iznerowicz (24th, 21:09.2) crossed the line before Middle Tennessee State's fourth runner. Anna Mate (27th, 21:16.4) did her part by helping displace Middle Tennessee State's fifth runner. Brink and Somogyi laid claim to the 24th and 25th best 6k times in school history, respectively.
On the men's side, No. 17 Middle Tennessee State ran away with the team title with a 41. The Lancers battled for second with Texas A&M, with the Aggies edging CBU out with a 165 to the Lancers 172. Florida (193) and Tennessee (217) rounded out the top five.
Manuel Peris and McMarshal Hartzenberg stole the show for CBU with Peris posting the second fastest 8k time in school history—24:04.6, just five seconds off the school record—for a 12th place finish. Hartzenberg posted the fourth fastest time in school history when he crossed the line in 24:10.6 for the 17th place finish. Giedrius Valincius (37th, 24:39.5) also etched his name on the school record books with his time landing him at 22nd best in school history. Peris, Hartzenberg, and Valincius all set new personal bests on the day as well.
As in the women's race, it came down to the placement of the fifth runner to determine the outcome. After the first three runners had crossed, Texas A&M held an eight point lead over the Lancers. Zlatko Kozuhar (48th, 24:51.9) narrowed the gap to three, though, coming in five spots ahead of Texas A&M's fourth runner. Cameron Hylton (64th, 25:04.8) rounded out the scoring five for CBU, but Texas A&M's fifth runner had already finished, securing the second place spot for the Aggies.
Also competing for the Lancers on Saturday were Marta Afonso (32nd, 21:23.9), Wiktoria Klebowska (50th, 21:46.5), and Cynthia Martin (55th, 21:52.5)—Martin's personal best—for the women. Henrique Neves (91st, 25:27.3) and Arturs Medveds (144th, 26:11.5) rounded things out for the men in College Station.
