
12 Aces Lead CBU to Five Sets with GCU

RIVERSIDE – Twelve aces nearly helped carry California Baptist University in a five-set Western Athletic Conference battle with Grand Canyon on Saturday.
The Lancers pushed the Lopes, who are a top-two team in the league, but ultimately finished just short in a 22-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-18, 15-11 loss on Saturday afternoon in the Van Dyne Gym. CBU's 12 aces were a record against an NCAA Division I opponent for the Lancers.
Elizabeth Gilley and Nicole Abreu led CBU's attack from the service line, with five and four aces, respectively. Gilley's five aces tied her career-high and for fourth in CBU's NCAA era (2013-19).
Setters Hana Okuhara and Natalie Zimmerer both logged double-doubles in the loss. Okuhara tallied 24 assists and 17 digs, while Zimmerer chipped in 27 assists, 12 digs and an ace.
Four Lancers eclipsed double-digit kills in the match, with Megan Sester producing a match-high 16 on a .257 percentage (16-7-57).
Cassidy Dennison notched 14 kills and eight digs and Christine Graf smashed 10 kills. Ellie Voss hit a team-high .444, with 10 kills and two errors on 18 attacks.
Grand Canyon improves to 16-4 and 6-2 in the WAC to keep itself in a second-place tie in the standings. The Lancers move to 9-11, 3-4 in the conference heading into a conference clash with CSU Bakersfield in the CBU Events Center on Monday at 7 p.m.
