The Lancers won the first two sets with impressive late runs and became the first WAC team to force a deciding fifth with NMSU. The Aggies pulled out the 23-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 16-14 victory in the Pan American Center, though, to remain undefeated in conference at 11-0 and 20-3 overall.
CBU also became the first team in the WAC to force a fifth set with the Aggies, who were ranked sixth in the last NCAA Division I West Region poll from the American Volleyball Coaches Association on Oct. 21.
It nearly ended NMSU's 12-match winning streak and threatened to give it just its second home loss of the year. The Lancers (10-13, 4-6) play their next two matches at home against Chicago State on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Kansas City on Monday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m.
The Aggies were the preseason favorite in the WAC after they won the conference tournament title to advance to the NCAA Tournament in 2018 before ending the year at 24-8. NMSU has been even better in 2019.
NM State came into the match leading all of Division I with an opposing hitting percentage of .096, ranking second in blocks per set (3.07), 13th in winning percentage (86.4) and 28th in hitting percentage (.264).
