Lancers Close Out Gary Troyer Tournament

CLAREMONT – California Baptist University's grueling five-games-over-three-days span came to a close at the Gary Troyer Tournament on Saturday.
The Lancers were led by two-goal effort from Kyle Johnson and Logan Mena in a one-goal, 8-7 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to open the day. Joseph Galgani then netted himself a second-half hat trick in a 10-7 loss to 18th-ranked Pomona-Pitzer in the evening. Gabe Thorne had 24 saves on the day to cap off an impressive week in the cage.
CBU will host its Lancer Joust next weekend. The Lancers open with two games on Friday against Ottawa (Arizona) at noon and then a Western Water Polo Association contest versus Fresno Pacific at 6 p.m. On Saturday, they will host Austin at 10 a.m. and Ottawa at 11:30 a.m.
All four games will be statted live on The FOSH and streamed on Youtube.com/CBULancers. The Lancers go into the four games with a 5-11 record, while CMS and Pomona-Pitzer improved to 7-7 and 9-5 on the year, respectively.
In Saturday's opener, CBU held a 7-5 lead with 6:42 to play with the Stags after back-to-back goals scored by Christian Britton and Nick Johnson. CMS managed to finish the game on a 3-0 run to capture the 8-7 victory in their home pool.
CBU also led 5-3 13 seconds into the second half after consecutive scores from Mena and Riley Bumgardner. Thorne finished with 13 saves.
The Sagehens jumped out to a five-goal lead, 7-2, in the first half of Saturday's finale. The Lancers responded with a 3-0 run thanks to two goals from Galgani and Bumgardner to cut their deficit to 7-5 with 5:03 left in the third quarter. Pomona-Pitzer scored the next two goals to take back momentum and go up four, 9-5, with 9:29 to play.
