STANFORD, CA--- The California Baptist University men's water polo team opened up the MPSF Invitational on Friday afternoon by giving #2 USC all they could handle.

The Lancers would score 13 goals against the highly ranked Trojans, but it would not be enough, as USC would win the match 17-13 at Avery Pool. The loss is just the second of the season for CBU, and the Trojans remain unbeaten through eight games.

USC displayed its potent offense early and often, scoring the opening four goals of the game. CBU would get on the scoreboard thanks to a rocket from Collin White that found the back of the net, giving CBU a little momentum heading into the second period. The Trojans' offense could not be slowed in the second period as they would tack on six more goals in the frame to lead the Lancers 11-4 at the half.

The Lancers went on the attack in the third period and would outscore the vaunted Trojans 5-3 in the period to bring themselves within reach. USC would keep the Lancers at a distance for the most part, but CBU would not give in and would continue to test the Trojans' defense. The Lancers would earn several penalties and power-play opportunities, bringing them within four goals with under three minutes to play.

USC's defense would hold over the final few minutes of action as they survived the Lancers' 17-13 win. Andrea Nuzzo was phenomenal with four goals and two assists for the Lancers, while Wyatt Bugbee was equally terrific with a hat trick. Whitley Beamon scored twice for CBU as well and would equal Nuzzo with two assists.

NEXT: The Lancers will compete in a pair of games tomorrow at the MPSF Invitational, beginning with an afternoon tilt against #8 Princeton at 10:40 AM.
