RIVERSIDE – For the second time in three days, California Baptist University took on a conference champion and gave its opponent just about all it could handle on Monday night in the Van Dyne Gym.
The Lancers came out and won the opening set, and then nearly forced a fifth in a four-set loss to New Mexico State (19-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-17). It keeps the Aggies as the lone undefeated team in the Western Athletic Conference with a 13-3 overall and 4-0 conference records.
NM State is the preseason favorite in the WAC after it won the conference tournament title to advance to the NCAA Tournament in 2018 before ending the year at 24-8. The Lancers stunned NMSU in the first meeting between these two teams, with a five-set win (25-23, 25-23, 19-25, 20-25, 15-11) in CBU's first-ever WAC match in the Van Dyne Gym on Sept. 20, 2018.
CBU posted an 8-6 advantage in aces, with Nicole Abreu posting a match-high three to go along with her 16 digs. Hana Okuhara also had two aces and 14 assists, while senior setter Natalie Zimmerer recorded her third-straight double-double and ninth of the year with 15 assists and 11 digs.
Cassidy Dennison nearly had a double-double, too, with nine digs and eight kills. Christine Graf and Yagoda Jedrzejczak brought a lot offensively and defensively, with seven and six kills, respectively, along with five blocks each.
The Lancers came out and won set one by capitalizing on five service errors from the Aggies, along with three aces – two from Okuhara.
Dennison had a team-high three kills in the game, while Jedrzejczak had two kills and two blocks.
NMSU evened up the match in set two, and then went up 15-10 in the third. CBU rallied back and fought all the way back within a point. Jedrzejczak and Dennison had aces in the run, while while kills from Dennison, Marks, Graf and a team block from Jedrzejczak and Graf cut the Lancers' deficit to 22-21.
Momentum swung back in the Aggies' favor when a touch was called on CBU at the net, which gave the visitors a precious two-point lead, 23-21, en route to a 25-22 win. NM State looked to get out of Van Dyne quickly, jumping out to a 19-9 lead in set four, but CBU made things interested with a 7-1 run.
Abreu sparked the charge with three-straight aces, while Megan Sester had two kills and Graf and Jedrzejczak each had a kill and block to bring the Lancers within 20-16. The Aggies rebounded and closed out the set with a 5-1 run.
Next, CBU travels to Utah Valley for a WAC match on Saturday at noon. The Lancers will then head to Seattle U to face the Redhawks on Monday at 6 p.m. before returning home for consecutive home matches with Grand Canyon and CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 19 and 21, respectively.
