Seniors, Aces Lead Lancers to Win

The Lancers overcame a first-set loss with three-straight victories to defeat the Wolverines (23-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-20) on Saturday afternoon in the Van Dyne Gym. CBU set a new program record for aces against an NCAA Division I opponent and matched its NCAA-era record for aces in a match, with a season-high 13 aces.

On the flip side, CBU committed just one reception error in the win. Seniors Elizabeth Gilley and Nicole Abreu led the way for the Lancers with four aces each. Gilley recorded her first career double-double with a career-high 11 kills and 11 digs, along with two blocks. Abreu had a match-high 14 digs and five assists, as well.

Fellow seniors Yagoda Jedrzejczak and Natalie Zimmerer put together big matches, as well. Zimmerer had 22 assists and eight digs, while Jedrzejczak did a bit of everything with five digs, four kills, three aces and two blocks.
CBU moves into a tie for fourth place in the Western Athletic Conference standings with the victory, with a 13-15 overall and 7-8 league record. The Lancers were tied with The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley for the time being, as the Vaqueros were scheduled to host Chicago State Saturday evening.
Utah Valley ends its regular season with a 10-18, 7-9 in conference record. The Lancers end their WAC season with a match against Seattle University on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Van Dyne Gym.
While it may have been Senior Day, the Lancers got big contributions from several non-seniors. Junior Sydney Marks continued to lead the offense with a team-high 13 kills on a .321 percentage. True freshman Christine Graf had 12 kills at a .250 clip and matched her career-high with five blocks.
Sophomores Ellie Voss, Hana Okuhara and Cassidy Dennison all had strong matches, as well. Voss had a hand in seven of the Lancers' nine blocks and finished with six kills. Okuhara added 20 assists and five digs, while Dennison contributed seven kills, three digs and two aces.

Utah Valley looked to take momentum early, as it ended set one on a 6-1 run for a 25-23 victory to start the match. The Lancers' blocking and serving shifted into another gear in set two, as they sided out at 80 percent (16-20) in the set with the help of five aces, three blocks and 13 digs to secure a 25-20 win in set two. Graf and Voss led the way with three kills and two block assists in the game.

Marks went off for seven kills in set three, as CBU took a lead in the match with a 25-21 win. The Lancers led 16-15 late in the game, and then pulled away with a 7-2 run fueled by four kills from Marks.

Gilley secured her double-double with three kills, three digs and two aces in set four, while Voss also had three blocks and two kills in the game. The Lancers trailed in the fourth set, 14-12, but used an 11-3 run to take a six-point lead, 23-17. Voss had four points (two kills, two blocks) in the run.

CBU celebrated its four seniors: Gilley, Jedrzejczak, Abreu and Zimmerer in a pre-match ceremony. Each of them have put up historic numbers in their Lancer careers.
Gilley ranks first in CBU's NCAA era and 10th all-time with 121 aces and is second in the NCAA era (just nine off the record) and 10th all-time, with 413 sets played. Jedrzejczak is the Lancers' NCAA-era leader in blocks and currently ranks fourth all-time, with 336. She also ranks third in the NCAA era and eighth all-time with a 1.03 per set average. Abreu ranks 10th in program history and second in the NCAA era with 1,032 digs. She is the all-time leader in digs per set, with 4.37. Zimmerer ranks seventh all-time and top-three in CBU's NCAA era record book with 2,160 assists and an 8.28 per set average.
