RIVERSIDE – Big performances from underclassmen Cassidy Dennison, Christine Graf and Paige Johnstone highlighted California Baptist University's home and Western Athletic Conference season finale on Sunday afternoon.
The Lancers ran into a desperate Seattle University squad, as the Redhawks extended their season with a 25-18, 25-22, 25-21 win in the Van Dyne Gym. The victory allowed Seattle to move onto the WAC Tournament as the No. 6 seed, as it tied CSU Bakersfield for the spot and earned it in a tiebreaker with a 5-4 sets record against the Roadrunners.
Seattle U ends the regular season with a 13-17, 4-12 conference record, while CBU moves to 13-16, 7-9 to finish in fifth place in the WAC standings.
The Lancers will play one more regular-season match with the Crosstown Showdown at UC Riverside on Wednesday at 7 p.m. From there, CBU will have to wait and see if its season will continue, which will happen if it is selected to compete in the 2019 National Invitational Volleyball Championship. Selection day for the 32-to-40 team postseason tournament on Sunday, Dec. 1.
Dennison continued her breakout redshirt sophomore campaign with nine kills, seven digs and a block. Graf, a true freshman, had eight kills on a .368 percentage (8-1-19) and four blocks. Johnstone, a fellow true freshman, had a match-high 10 digs in about two-and-a-half sets of play.
Seniors Elizabeth Gilley and Yagoda Jedrzejczak put up solid numbers, as well. Gilley had five kills, five digs and an ace in her final home match, while Jedrzejczak assisted on six of the Lancers' seven blocks.
