Lancers Win Wild Regular-Season Finale at UCR

RIVERSIDE – An improbable set-one comeback and a resilient final stand in set five guided California Baptist University to a victory in its regular-season finale in the Crosstown Showdown at UC Riverside.
The Lancers and Highlanders battled from start to finish in a thrilling match on Wednesday night in the UCR SRC Arena. The match featured four overtime sets, with the Lancers pulling out the 27-25, 25-23, 24-26, 27-29, 21-19 victory.
UC Riverside looked to secure a comeback victory with a 29-27 win in set four, which set a new record for the longest game in CBU's NCAA Division I history. The Highlanders then held match point twice in set five at 15-14 and 16-15.
There was no quit from CBU, though, as it kept the match going and closed it out the fifth set on a 3-1 run. Sydney Marks killed the final two points to secure the Lancer victory at long last. It made for a career night for Marks, as the junior notched a personal-best 21 kills on a .349 percentage (21-6-43).
All four seniors put together incredible performances in their final regular-season matches. Elizabeth Gilley logged a career-high 15 kills, along with 10 digs, four aces and two blocks and became CBU's NCAA-era leader in sets played, with 421 in her career, in the process.
Senior setter Natalie Zimmerer, libero Nicole Abreu and middle blocker Yagoda Jedrzejczak were steady presences, as well. Jedrzejczak (six blocks, five kills) helped CBU record a season-high 14 blocks on the night.
Abreu finished with a match-high 27 digs, which tied for the sixth-most in an NCAA-era match at CBU. Zimmerer logged a season-high 55 assists to tie for seventh in the Lancers' NCAA-era, single-match record book, and added four kills, three blocks and four digs.
Freshmen Paige Johnstone and Christine Graf were solid contributors. Johnstone added 13 digs and two aces, while Graf chipped in 11 kills and six blocks. Middle blocker Ellie Voss was another key two-way player with seven kills and seven blocks.
CBU ends the regular season with a 14-16 record, while UC Riverside falls to 6-21. The Lancers have now won two-straight matches over the Highlanders in five sets. CBU now has to wait and see if its season will continue, which will happen if it it's selected to compete in the 2019 National Invitational Volleyball Championship. Selection day for the 32-to-40 team postseason tournament is Sunday, Dec. 1.

All four seniors improved upon their historic numbers in the win. Abreu ranks ninth in program history and second in the NCAA era with 1,061 digs. She is the all-time leader in digs per set, with 4.37. Gilley moved up to ninth in CBU's all-time record book with 126 aces and 421 sets played (both are NCAA-era records). Jedrzejczak improved upon her NCAA-era lead with 348 blocks, which also ranks fourth all-time. She also ranks third in the NCAA era and sixth all-time with a 1.04 per set average. Zimmerer ranks seventh all-time and second in CBU's NCAA era record book with 2,228 assists and ninth all-time and third in the NCAA era with an 8.28 per set average.
