RIVERSIDE – Four individual victories highlighted the end of 2019 for California Baptist University. Garrett Strang, Zach Schrader, AJ Raya and Zach Rowe all won their matches in a dual with Drexel on Friday night in the Van Dyne Gym.
The Lancers fought through injures to two of their regular starters, including a forfeit, but fell to the Dragons on a score of 23-15. CBU moves to 2-2 in duals this season, while Drexel improves to 5-3, as it heads into Christmas break.
Drexel won the first two matches of the dual to take a 9-0 lead. CBU's forfeit started things off at 165 pounds and the Lancers' Jacob Cooper battled Michael O'Malley, who is ranked 31st by Wrestlestat at 174 pounds, in a 12-8 decision loss.
Strang got the Lancers on the board with an impressive 8-3 decision victory at 184. Strang never trailed after getting a takedown with 1:16 left in the first period. He built up a 5-1 lead with an escape and takedown in the second period, and closed out the win with a takedown in the final 16 seconds.
The Dragons' Bryan McLaughlin got a hard-fought 6-3 win over Arick Lopez at 197 pounds. Schrader brought CBU right back in it with a pin in the final minute of the first period to cut his team's deficit to 12-9.
Three-straight wins locked up the win for Drexel, as it led 23-9 with two matches to go. The Lancers closed out the dual with two more wins from Raya and Rowe at 149 and 157, respectively.
Raya got on the board first with a takedown in the final 45 seconds of the first period. He would never trail, with a second-period escape, a takedown in the final 13 seconds of regulation and 1:37 of riding time rounding out his scoring for a 6-2 decision victory.
The match of the night came at the very end, as Rowe pulled out a 5-3 sudden victory. Neither wrestler managed to score until Rowe notched an escape point 22 seconds into the third period. Drexel's Felix Belga took a 2-1 lead with a takedown in the final 36 seconds, but a reversal eight seconds later gave Rowe a 3-2 edge again, but Belga escaped with 14 seconds left to force overtime.
Rowe was undeterred and came out the aggressor in overtime, as he got the takedown 16 seconds into overtime for the win.
The Lancers will next wrestle four duals in two days to start 2020. CBU will first visit Davison on Thursday, Jan. 9 and then wrestle the Virginia Military Institute, Cleveland State and Clarion on Friday, Jan. 10.
