CLEVELAND – California Baptist University saved its best for last and climbed 13 spots up the leaderboard for a 21st-place finish at the College Swimming Coaches Association of America National Invitational Championship on Saturday.
The Lancers made the big move with five top-20 finishes, including three top-10 swims, to finish the week with 103 points. Akron won the meet (637.5), while Rice (617) and Florida International (465) rounded out the top three.
CBU earned wins over Army, Vanderbilt, Wyoming, San Diego, CSU Bakersfield, Grand Canyon, Fordham and Villanova just to name a handful of the 47 teams to tally a point this week.
"I think CBU earned a lot of respect nationally at this meet," Coach Rick Rowland said. "There were a lot of teams coming up to us and congratulating us all week. This is a great meet for us, especially during our transition. It's something to not only hang your hat on after a conference meet, but a great preparation tool for us in the future when we are going to the NCAA Championships. It gives you the same training schedule and two-week turnaround from a conference to a national meet."
Isabella Rhodes record the top finish of the week for the Lancers in the 100-yard freestyle when she took fourth place in 50.16 seconds.
"That was a great time from Isabella, one of our fastest 100 swims of all time," Rowland said.
Rhodes also swam the anchor leg of CBU's seventh-place team in the 400-freestyle relay. Rebeca Oviedo, Rita Smirnova, McKenzie Kelly and Rhodes finished in 3:22.97 and were only 1.07 seconds off a top-four finish.
The quartet just missed out on bettering their CBU record of 3:22.20 set at the Western Athletic Conference Championships two weeks ago.
Buse Topcu finished 10th in the 1000-yard freestyle for the Lancers' second-best individual swim of the week. The sophomore finished in 10:12.47.
Oviedo took 13th in the other distance event for CBU, the 1650 free, with a time of 16:53.23. Topcu took 24th (17:20.51) and Mackenzie Mergel 29th (17:44.59) in the race, as well.
Smirnova logged the final top-20 swim in the 100 individual medley, with a time of 58.71.
"It was a really deep and crowded meet for the women," Rowland said. "It was a big deal to get top-10 or top-20 here."
Three other Lancers logged top-58 individual finishes. Topcu took 38th in the 200 butterfly (2:11.09), while Emily Longfellow finished 41st in the 100 IM and Kelly took 58th in the 100 free (52.61).
