LAKEWOOD, Wash. – All five California Baptist University golfers will go into the third and final round of the Western Athletic Conference Championships in top-21 standing.
Samantha Martirez led the Lancers in Friday's second round by shooting three-over-par 74 to move eight spots up into a 21st-place tie. A four-shot improvement from her first round and a performance that tied for the eighth-best performance of the day in the field.
CBU ends its first-ever WAC Championships on Saturday at the Oakbrook Golf Club with an 8 a.m. tee time. Live results are provided at Golfstat.com. The Lancers are ineligible for the team title due to the transition to NCAA Division I, but have five golfers competing as individuals who are eligible for medalist honors.
The Lancers, as a team, created some momentum throughout the day as they head into Saturday's final round.
Kristyna Abrahamova entered the day with a team-best even-par and birdied the first two holes of the round to become tournament co-leader. Abrahamova is still the Lancer highest in the standings in a 13th-place tie, with a 150 (71-79).
The rest of CBU's lineup is separated by just two strokes.
Yifei "Sunny" Wang is in 16th-place with a 151 (74-77), while Jocelyn Chee (77-75), Erica Wang (77-75) and Martirez (78-74) are all tied for 21st in the 45-player field with 152s.
The final two holes proved to be the toughest of today's round. All five Lancers were a combined 15-over-par through the first 16 holes before shooting 10-over-par as a group at No. 17 and No. 18. The tournament field has bogeyed or worse at those two holes more than any other holes on the course. Abrahamova, Chee and Sunny Wang were able to par both holes on Thursday, but only had two pars with three bogeys and two double bogeys today. Erica Wang had bogeys at both holes while Martirez finished with a par and bogey.
Seattle U took over the team lead on Friday, with a 586, while NM State (587) and Utah Valley (588) are in second and third place, respectively.
UVU's Kaylee Shimizu, NM State's Dominique Galloway and Vendela From of the Redhawks are all tied for the individual lead with 142s.
