DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – For the seventh year in a row, California Baptist University was crowned National Cheerleaders Association Collegiate Cheer Champions on the Bandshell on Friday.
A new division could not stop CBU's incredible streak at the NCA Collegiate Cheer Championships, as the Lancers won the All Girl NCAA Division I crown after winning an unprecedented six titles in Division II.
Friday marked the second year in a row, CBU did it in comeback fashion after nailing a zero-deduction routine in the finals to keep its undefeated run from 2013 alive and well.
The Lancers scored the highest all-girl routine of the entire division (both prelims and finals) on Friday, with a zero-deduction routine of 97.47. It gave CBU an overall score of 97.1459 when combined with its 96.18 score in prelims.
"We are incredibly proud of what this team has achieved coming into a new division," Coach Tami Fleming said. "We knew that D-I would be a real challenge against high-level, experienced teams, so we are honored and blessed to be the D-I champions."
It was the highest overall all-girl score for the entire NCA Collegiate Cheer Championship. Louisville won the All Girl Division IA with a 96.7042, while Oklahoma Baptist won Division II with a 97.0625 and Bridgewater State took the D-III title with a 96.7917.
Stephen F. Austin State took second place in All Girl Division I with a 96.5833, while Sam Houston State, the 2018 champion, rounded out the top three with a 96.5292. Sam Houston State was the only team to lead the Lancers after the prelims when it scored a 96.47.
"This team showed true courage, confidence and composure on the mat today," Fleming said. "They exemplified what being a Lancer is all about."
CBU had two STUNT teams finish in the top three of the Girls 4 Group STUNT Division on Saturday. The Lancers took second and third place with scores of 91.8333 and 91.444, with Louisville being the only team to beat them with a 92.7778. CBU topped 10 other teams from Clemson, Cal Poly, Sam Houston State, Massachusetts and Oklahoma Baptist in the process.
The Lancers' Pom and Jazz teams also took second and fifth place, respectively, in their competitions. CBU scored a 92.4857 to take second place in Pom, behind Stephen F. Austin State (94.6857), while topping teams from Eastern Kentucky and Loyola Chicago. The Jazz team moved up from ninth place in the prelims to a fifth-place finish for CBU, with a 90.400.
