TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – With a win in sight, California Baptist University dominated the field and shot one-under-par as a team to secure the Indiana State Spring Invite championship on Monday.
CBU swept the team and individual title in its regular-season finale, with Erica Wang and Jocelyn Chee tying for the individual championship at the Country Club of Terre Haute. It is Wang's second first-place finish of the season and fourth in the top five. Chee has now rattled off three-straight top-five finishes.
It is the Lancers' third tournament victory of the season, and marks their 23rd tournament victory since 2013-14 and 39th in team history. The Lancers have recorded at least three tournament wins in each of the last six seasons, a streak kept intact even with their NCAA Division I transition beginning this year.
"Everyone played their final four holes one-under par today," Coach Marc Machado said. "We really finished strong and I'm just amazed that it's our third tournament win in our first year in Division I. I'm overwhelmed, it's awesome. I am so blessed to be here coaching at this tremendous university. All this success is all credit to putting the TEAM first and giving all the glory to God."
CBU came into Tuesday's final 18 holes six shots off day-one leader Youngstown State. The Lancers had the best second round by 12 strokes, with a one-under-par 287, as it went on to win the event by seven shots with a 578 total (291-287). The Penguins of Youngstown State dropped to second (585) and Loyola finished third (605).
All four scorers shot 74 or better for CBU on Monday, with three Lancers shooting par or better in both rounds this week. It was yet another highlight moment for CBU's Wang, Chee, Yifei "Sunny" Wang, Kristyna Abrahamova and Samantha Martirez to experience together.
"In just about every scenario, I feel like this group has had great experiences -- whether we are in the final group or not or whether we are in California or somewhere else in the country," Machado said. "We focused on having courage and moments in our meeting last night. We wanted to seize this moment with courage to have a new moment to look back and smile on as a group."
Chee led the way with a two-under 70 that shot her up from sixth to a first-place tie, with a 142 (72-70).
"I can't believe Jocelyn is a sophomore, she has so much potential, so continues to amaze me and the team," Machado said. "She has such a high ceiling and I am excited to see what's going to come from her."
Wang moved up from second to the first-place tie with Chee by shooting 71 on Monday to complete her 142 (71-71). It took three playoff holes to break the tie between the two Lancers, but Chee did so with a birdie on the third playoff hole. Wang now has four wins in her CBU career, which ties for the most in the NCAA era (2014-19) for the Lancers.
"Erica was a rock, and was just steady in so many ways, as she always is as our captain. It was cool to see them battle each other, and they took it very seriously even though they're very good friends," Machado said of the playoff. "I am proud of the team from top to bottom."
Yifei Wang and Abrahamova also moved up the leaderboard in round two for CBU. Yifei took fifth place with a 146 (72-74) after she started the day in a sixth-place tie. Abrahamova vaulted eight spots up the board with an even-par 72 on Monday, as she finished off a 148 (76-72).
"Sunny continues to fight for us and I am proud of her for the heart and the guts she's showed for us this year," Machado said. "Kristyna was extremely clutch today playing even par, including her last four holes. When the moments are biggest, she always steps up."
Martirez took 29th place in the 77-player field with a 155 on the week (76-79).
With the regular season now in the rearview mirror, CBU can turn its full attention to the Western Athletic Conference Championship. The Lancers debut at the conference tournament will come April 18-20 at the Pacific Northwest and Oakbrook Golf Club in Lakewood, Wash.
"We will continue to focus on the four pillars of our TEAM: attitude, work ethic, heart and short game," Machado said. "The goal for the WAC is compete, and even though we can't win it we want to have the best score. We won't be on the scoreboard but we will know where we stand."
