MOSCOW, Idaho – The combination of junior Sydney Marks and true freshman Christine Graf led California Baptist University on the first day of the season at the Idaho Volleyball Classic on Friday.
Graf made quite the collegiate debut, as she logged double-digit kills in both of the Lancers' matches versus Illinois-Chicago and the host Idaho Vandals in the Memorial Gym. The outside hitter totaled 21 kills on a .400 percentage (21-5-40) in her first two collegiate matches. Marks matched Graf with 21 kills on the day, as well, while Nicole Abreu led the defense with 22 digs and three aces overall.
It was not enough for CBU to pull out a victory against two strong squads. The Lancers open the year 0-2 going into a match against Eastern Washington on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. PDT, while Illinois-Chicago and Idaho start out 1-0.
UIC won the first match on scores of 25-21, 25-22, 25-22. The Flames went 18-13 last year and are projected to finish third in the Horizon League this season. The Lancers won the first set of Friday's finale with Idaho, but the Vandals rebounded to take the match, 22-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-22. Idaho is coming off a 23-10 season in which it finished runner-up in the Big Sky Conference.
Graf logged six kills on a .667 percentage in her first-ever collegiate set versus UIC. She went on to finish the first match of the year with a team-high 11 kills on a .381 percentage and three blocks to also lead led the Lancers with 12 points.
Marks added nine kills on a team-high .389 percentage for CBU, which also received 13 digs and four assists from Abreu. Hana Okuhara tallied 16 assists, while Natalie Zimmerer also had 14 assists and five digs.
The Lancers' offense was well rounded in the final match of the day with Idaho. They hit .310 as a team, with five players logging at least eight kills. Marks led the way with 12 kills and five digs, while Graf had 10 kills on a .421 percentage (10-2-19).
Yagoda Jedrzejczak (nine kills), Megan Sester (eight kills) and Cassidy Dennison (eight kills) balanced out the offense. Okuhara logged a career-high 25 assists, eight digs and two aces, while Zimmerer chipped in 22 assists, as well. Abreu was solid, too, with nine digs and three aces at libero.
