RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Both California Baptist University cross country teams secured top-four finishes at the season-opening Mark Covert Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton at Carbon Canyon Regional Park on Saturday morning.
A day after returning from its week-long team camping trip to Big Bear, the Lancers' women and men finished runner-up and in fourth place with scores of 60 and 132, respectively, among the 15-plus college teams in attendance. Tight packs of four to five runners were key to CBU's success on both sides.
"The whole thing today was to execute the plan," said Coach Adam Tribble, whose team took the opportunity to bond and train hard at altitude in Big Bear. "We had a small gap with the guys but with the girls we finished five side-by-side. The whole goal was to do that and not necessarily race really hard."
On the women's side, CBU got off to a great start and kept a pack at or near the front of the entire 5,000-meter race. It is the second year in a row the Lancers have finished top-two at the Mark Covert Classic.
All five of the Lancers' scorers finished within a second of each other from 10th through 14th place. Anna Mate led the way (18:23.9), followed by Emilie Renaud (18:24.2), Andrea Kolbeinsdottir (18:24.2), Elin Brink (18:24.4) and Fruzsi Ladanyi (18:24.9).
It combined for a total team time of 1:32:01.60, which ranks fourth in CBU's 5K record book.
"As far as where the team is, what we were able to do and how we look, we're light years ahead of where we were last year," Tribble said. "This event is a good way to come out here and just kind of break the ice."
CBU's top four on the men's side crossed the finish line within 1.7 seconds of each other in 26th through 29th place in the 8K event. Arturs Medveds led the Lancers (25:47.8), while Cameron Hylton (25:47.8), Manuel Peris Bruno (25:49.2) and McMarshall Hartzenberg (25:49.4) rounded out the top four.
Henrique Neves was the Lancers' No. 5 finisher in 32nd place (25:55.6) to give them a total team time of 2:09:09.80.
"We had a bunch of guys running their first college race," said Tribble, naming off Neves, Medveds, Hylton and Bruno. "It was good to see four of top five were running their first college races and looking pretty good."
The Lancer women were also represented by Marta Afonso Lourenco (18th, 18:39.6); Karolina Iznerowicz (20th, 18:48.1); Wiktoria Klebowska (23rd, 18:50.2); Cynthia Martin (34th, 19:11.3); Tina Smid (20:39.1) and Chloe Beedy (21:41.2). Zlatko Kožuhar (46th, 26:10.3) and Hector Peralta (27:15.3) also represented the men.
CBU has two weeks off from events before running in the UC Riverside Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14.
"I thought all in all we accomplished what we wanted to do," Tribble said. "We wanted to come out here and have a low-key opener and keep the groups together. I thought we did that, it took some work in the process but I am overall pleased with where we are training wise. I am very pleased with where the teams are at this point."
