Lancers Make Their Mark in CBU Record Books

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Both California Baptist University cross country teams finished top-two at the UCR Invitational on Saturday morning. Additionally, both teams rewrote team and individual record books at CBU.
"The women and the men had specific yet very different race plans today," said Coach Adam Tribble. "I thought both did a great job of executing those plans."
The women's 6k Invitational opened up festivities at the four-race event at the UCR Agg Course, with the Lancers taking first-place with a team score of 32 and a total team time of one hour, 42 minutes, 50.21 seconds—breaking the school record by 53 seconds. Eight of nine CBU runners finished top 20 to land a spot on the podium.
Emilie Renaud was the first Lancer across the line, grabbing third place with a time of 20:25.20. Anna Mate crossed right after, finishing fourth with a time of 20:26.04. Fruzsi Ladanyi (6th, 20:34.83), Marta Afonso (9th, 20:41.71) and Andrea Kolbeinsdottir (10th, 20:42.43) rounded out CBU's scoring five and their top ten finishers.
The Lancer trio of reigning WAC cross country champion Anett Somogyi (14th, 20:54.95), Elin Brink (16th, 20:57.64), Wiktoria Klebowska (19th, 21:06.65) rounded out CBU's top-20 finishers, with reigning WAC Freshman of the Year Karolina Iznerowicz (29th, 21:24.94) wrapping up the race for the Lancers. Luz Karen Olivera (26th, 21:22.41) ran unattached.
Each of the Lancers podium placers: Renaud, 2nd; Mate, 3rd; Ladanyi, 4th; Afonso, 8th; Kolbeinsdottir, 10th; Somogyi, 11th; Brink, 14th; Klebowska, 21st all etched their names in the school record book—each of their times besting the previous 14th best time in school history.
CBU bested second place-finisher Southern Utah by 22 points after finishing 13 points behind Southern Utah in last year's edition of the UCR Invitational. Cal Poly (3rd, 72 points), Utah Valley (4th, 104 points), and UC Santa Barbara (5th, 151 points) rounded out the top five. In the preseason poll, Cal Poly was ranked in seventh place—one spot ahead of CBU in the USTFCCCA West Region Rankings and Southern Utah was ranked 10th and Utah Valley 14th in the Mountain Region.
The Lancer men also made their mark on the school record book, posting the second fastest team time in school history with a total team time of two hours, four minutes and 7.2 seconds. CBU's scoring five all finished in the top 25 on Saturday.
McMarshall Hartzenberg was the first Lancer to complete the course in the men's 8k invitational, finishing 11th on the day with a 24:38.41 time. Ten seconds later, the first of three successive CBU runners crossed the line with Timothy Legemet leading the charge, grabbing the 21st spot with a 24:48.20 time. Hartzenburg and Legemet landed 19th and 23rd in school history, respectively. Zlatko Kozuhar (22nd, 24:50.37) and Giedrius Valincius (23rd, 24:52.07) rounded out the pack-running trio, with Arturs Medveds (25th, 24:57.97) following shortly after to finish up the scoring five for the Lancers.
Newcomers Manuel Peris-Bruno (25:01.91) and Cameron Hylton (25:03.55) finished 35th and 36th, respectively; Henrique Neves (62nd, 25:26.66) and Hector Peralta (133rd, 26:58.76) wrapped up the men's 8k invitational for CBU. Florian LePallec (48th, 25:14.58) and Cody Beeson (26:32.29) ran unattached.

UC Santa Barbara (3rd, 97 points), Utah Valley (4th, 111 points), and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (5th, 124 points) rounded out the top five. In the preseason poll, Cal Poly was ranked 8th and UC Santa Barbara was ranked 13th in the West Region. Utah Valley was ranked 14th in the Mountain Region.
Three CBU runners competed in the women's 5k open; the Lancers did not log a team score in the women's 5k open. Cynthia Martin placed 16th with an 18:26.76 time. Tina Smid (51st, 19:22.63) and Chloe Beedy (87th, 20:01.20) concluded a successful day for the Lancers. Martin, Smid, and Beedy all set personal bests in the 5k open.
In total, nine of CBU's runners set personal records, with another six competing at these distances for the first time with the Lancers. "We're getting better and moving in the right direction," Tribble said.
CBU will travel to Minneapolis in two weeks for the Roy Griak Invitational.
