MOSCOW, Idaho – A valiant comeback attempt from California Baptist University came up just short in a hard-fought, five-set loss to Eastern Washington on the final day of the Idaho Volleyball Classic on Saturday.
The Lancers fought back from being down after three sets and in the fifth set before the Eagles eventually pulled it out, 17-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-25, 15-12. CBU dominated the fourth set to stay alive, and then rallied from a 9-3 hole in the fifth to make things interesting up until the very end.
Five CBU players finished with at least seven kills, with three of them being middle blockers. Sydney Marks finished with a team-high 14 kills on a .379 percentage, while Yagoda Jedrzejczak hit .478 (12-1-23) with 12 kills and six digs from the middle.
For the third match in a row, Christine Graf hit double-digit kills with 12 to go along with three digs and two blocks.
Fellow outside hitter Cassidy Dennison added 11 kills, nine digs and an ace. Ellie Voss chipped in seven kills at a .400 clip.
Setters Natalie Zimmerer (27 assists, 13 digs) and Hana Okuhara (23 assists, 14 digs) both recorded the first double-doubles of the year for the Lancers. Nicole Abreu notched 17 digs and an ace, while defensive specialist and true freshman Paige Johnson had 14 digs in her first career start.
The Lancers head to the Pepperdine Tournament next weekend. They'll face the host Waves on Thursday at 6 p.m. and then play Fairfield and Texas A&M on Friday at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
