Lancers Fight at Pepperdine

MALIBU, Calif. – Cassidy Dennison and Nicole Abreu led California Baptist University's offense and defense, respectively, at Pepperdine on Thursday night.
Dennison posted a team-high 10 points on eight kills and two aces, while Abreu notched 11 digs, three assists and an ace of her own. The Waves posted a 25-21, 25-17, 25-20 victory in their home opener, despite the Lancers launching one rally after another, in the Firestone Fieldhouse.
CBU will finish the Pepperdine Tournament with a doubleheader on Friday against Fairfield and Texas A&M, at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., respectively. Fans can follow along with live stats and video, with FloVolleyball providing the stream for the Fairfield and Texas A&M matches.
Pepperdine is a storied program that's won 11 West Coast Conference (WCC) championships and qualified for the NCAA Tournament 24 times. The Waves are coming off another outstanding season in which they took second in the WCC and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Waves have always been even tough to beat on their home court, with an all-time winning percentage of .721 (374-145) in the Firestone Fieldhouse, including a 12-1 record last year.
CBU battled back each and every set on Thursday. Down 17-10 in the first game, the Lancers made things interesting with a 6-3 run sparked by two aces and a kill from Dennison.
Set one ended on a 5-3 run from the Lancers. The charge came on kills from Megan Sester, Dennison, Christine Graf and a combo block from Ellie Voss and Graf. The Lancers closed out set two on a 5-3 run, too, after an ace Yagoda Jedrzejczak and another kill from Dennison.
Pepperdine improves to 2-2 on the year, while CBU moves to 0-4 on the season.
